Position Summary

The Accounting Manager, reporting to the Controller, plays a critical role in the financial management, compliance, and operational effectiveness of the Agency. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate grant and donor fund records, budgets, reimbursements, financial reporting, and supporting documentation while ensuring compliance with funder requirements, Agency policies, and applicable accounting standards.

Working closely with the Controller, Director of Grant Writing & Management, and Program Leadership, the Accounting Manager will develop and monitor grant and donor fund budgets, track financial activity, prepare reimbursements and financial reports, support grant compliance and monitoring, and maintain accurate and up-to-date grant tracking systems. This role serves as an important bridge between Finance, Development, and Program teams to ensure restricted funds are appropriately budgeted, tracked, and reported.

The Accounting Manager also provides day-to-day supervision and direction to the Accounts Payable Manager and Operations Specialist, including setting expectations, monitoring performance goals, and ensuring efficient and accurate completion of key accounting and operational functions.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Processing bi-weekly payroll and ensuring accurate and timely payroll administration.
  • Supporting restricted fund tracking and reconciliation.
  • Assisting with the monthly financial close and preparation of internal financial reports.
  • Monitoring grant and donor fund activity to identify variances, compliance issues, and reporting needs.
  • Supporting audits and other financial reviews as needed.
  • Ensuring accounting records and documentation are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with Agency policies and applicable accounting standards.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, controls, and efficiency.
  • Providing responsive financial support and guidance to Agency leaders and staff.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Candidates without a bachelor’s degree may be considered with a minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with demonstrated responsibility for financial reporting, accounting operations, and financial controls.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting and restricted fund accounting preferred.
  • Experience with grant and contract financial management, including reimbursement-based funding and funder compliance, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with month-end and year-end close processes, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial statement preparation.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze, reconcile, and interpret financial data from multiple sources.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies and financial issues.
