Job Description

Title: Teacher Assistant

Reports To: Principal

Primary purpose

The Teacher Assistant maintains a structured but caring and warm classroom allowing the students to thrive and develop with confidence and trust. The Teacher Assistant takes instruction from primary teacher and assists in teaching and supervising students. The Teacher Assistant is accessible, approachable, and welcoming, managing student situations with discretion, respect, and sensitivity.

Day to day responsibilities
  • Take instruction from primary teacher to teach phonics and reading to elementary school aged dyslexic children utilizing dePaul School's Orton-Gillingham based curriculum.
  • Assist in teaching math and writing to elementary school aged dyslexic children utilizing a variety of multi-sensory, research-based teaching methods proven to help students with learning differences.
  • Maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom as provided by primary teacher.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or seeking college degree from an accredited university required.
  • Classroom management experience preferred. Class size is typically under 10 students.
  • Training in dyslexia and /or an Orton-Gillingham based curriculum preferred. (will also be provided)
  • Experience working with children with learning disabilities preferred.
  • Certification or experience utilizing a multi-sensory phonics/linguistic program preferred.
