Description:
The YReads! Program is an exciting literacy/mentoring initiative for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The program uses curriculum-based literacy instruction to help struggling readers in areas of phonetics, sight word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As a tutor, you would provide assistance and support to the program coordinator during YReads! hours to ensure that outlined program goals and procedures are being achieved.
Duties:
- Assists in student supervision, helps maintain order, and positively reinforce "good choices" when appropriate.
- Assists students to and from the restroom.
- Assists coordinator in picking up and dropping off students around the school.
- Oversees and ensures that mandatory procedures are being followed when parents or guardians are picking up students.
- Maintains necessary paperwork: testing, volunteer and student sign in and out logs.
- Required to teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YREADS Coordinator using all curricula.
- Attends required abuse risk management training.
- Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Desire or interest in learning about literacy intervention
- Experience working with children in an educational environment
- Compassion and empathy for struggling readers
- Tutoring experience strongly preferred
Job Summary: The Youth Development Specialist oversees the engagement and development of children participating in YMCA programs. They are responsible for implementing and facilitating enriching activities tailored to their assigned group, supporting the YMCA's mission to strengthen community bonds through positive interactions with members. Members encompass anyone with a current or potential relationship with the YMCA, including children, parents, staff, volunteers, community members, donors, and guests.
