This is technical work enforcing Mechanical and Fire Suppression System installation codes and regulations. Duties involve journeyman level work inspecting and testing buildings and Mechanical and Fire Suppression System installations or office work reviewing and interpreting approved plans and specifications for compliance with applicable building codes and regulations. An employee in this classification is responsible for protecting the public against hazards caused by defective materials and workmanship in building constructions.

Duties require skilled technical examinations and the application of standard trade practices to building inspections. The incumbent may work in the field as assigned throughout the unincorporated areas of the county and municipalities under Inter-local Agreements. The incumbent reports to a lead inspector, supervisor, management official or designee.

What Would You Do?
  • Checks each project for defects, omissions, violations, and other departures from correct procedure and county building codes.
  • Makes technical inspections of new buildings and Mechanical and Fire Suppression System installations or modification of existing building constructions.
  • Issues notice of non-compliance where work is not correct and directs to the attention of the Chief Building Inspector.
  • Inspects all work upon completion and signs permit giving final approval for the county that the work is safe for life and property.
  • Makes routine and periodic inspections of area assigned to check for violations and hazardous conditions.
  • Investigates complaints of defective building installations reported as safety hazards.
  • Makes re-inspections as directed; reports violations.
  • Performs building tests on equipment and materials as directed.
  • Assists in the initial training of lower level Mechanical Inspectors.
  • Perform data entry and retrieval functions in researching violations and scheduling inspections.
  • Performs related work as assigned or required.
Position Specific Requirements
  • Florida Driver's License or Florida Commercial Driver’s License at time of hire.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
Mechanical Inspector 1 (Salary Range: $54,204.80- $70,116.80)
  • High school or vocational school graduate and 5 years of experience in the field of construction or a related field; or a combination of experience that meets eligibility requirements according to one of the criteria of FS 468 to take the examination for certification as a Building Code Inspector; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Applicant must secure a Florida State Certification as a Mechanical Inspector within one (1) year of employment and maintain the required continuing education.
Mechanical Inspector 2 (Salary Range: $64,001.60 - $83,574.40)
  • Five (5) years of experience as a trades foreman, contractor, or at a similar supervisory level, OR three (3) years as a mechanical inspector; OR a certification and an Associate’s degree in an engineering, planning, construction, or related field; or completion of a two-year vocational or technical diploma or certification in a related field and three (3) years as a mechanical inspector;

    or a certification and a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, construction, or related field and one (1) year as a mechanical inspector; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. And possess a valid certification as a Mechanical Inspector as recognized by the State of Florida (Certificate); OR
  • Possession of a standard certificate issued by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board or a fire safety inspector license issued pursuant to chapter 633 and have satisfactorily completed a building code inspector or plans examiner classroom training course or program that provides at least 200 but not more than 300 hours in the certification category sought, except for one-family and two-family dwelling training programs, which must provide at least 500 but not more than 800 hours of training as prescribed by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board;

    OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that meets eligibility requirements according to one of the criteria of FS 468 to take the examination for certification as a Building Code Inspector.
Highly Desirable
  • Knowledge of the methods and materials involved in building construction, Mechanical and Fire Suppression System installations, and of standing building testing devices.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, and operating a variety of heating and air conditioning installations, equipment, and appliances, and of standard mechanical and fire protection systems testing devices.
