Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay: $1,751.77. (If the appointment is an internal promotion, the position will be filled at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% of the employee’s current rate, whichever is higher.)

Position Description

This is a highly responsible position in the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform all duties in an optimal and responsible manner, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model, and treat all persons with dignity and respect.

Responsibilities include:

  • Adhering to agency or facility policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, staff, and the community.
  • Ensuring a zero-tolerance environment for youth escapes, abuse, sexual harassment, and inappropriate conduct.
  • Assisting in the operation of a secure detention center and ensuring the safe custody of all detained youth.
  • Assuring that all detained youth receive their constitutional rights and special concern for legal, medical, and mental health issues.
  • Assisting the supervisor to ensure that the detained youth’s services and programming comply with court orders, rules, departmental policies, and quality assurance standards.
  • Completing training requirements to maintain proficiency in medication dispensing methods and distributing medication when the designated medical authority is absent.
  • Performing duties in master control, admissions, releases, and transportation as needed.
  • Supervising youth during all activities and maintaining control through directives, counseling, or appropriate use of Protective Action Response (PAR).
  • Inspecting the facility, youth, visitors, and packages for contraband.
  • Training and coaching employees concerning their duties and facility policies.
  • Assuming acting supervisor role in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Writing reports and preparing required records regarding incidents, youth movement, and noteworthy information.
  • Preparing detained youth for court appearances and transporting and escorting them to medical, criminal justice, social services, and judicial facilities.
  • Using security and emergency equipment to ensure safety.
  • Completing checks (10‑minute, 5‑minute, constant sight, or uninterrupted sound supervision) for each youth confined to room confinement or designated as suicidal.
  • Assessing and analyzing information available through the Juvenile Justice Information System.
  • Initiating and maintaining detained youth counts as directed.
  • Attending required training and using CPR, AED, and first aid techniques in emergencies.
  • Attending required meetings.
  • Maintaining a valid driver’s license and reporting changes within 72 hours.
  • Complying with Florida Statutes section 215.422, Prompt Payment Compliance Law.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Mathematical competence (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of rational numbers).
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records.
  • Ability to work effectively with youth, co‑workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Knowledge of good hygiene practices.
  • Knowledge of department and facility policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions promptly.
  • Ability to determine appropriate level of force.
  • Ability to observe changes in youth behaviors.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback to correct behavior.
  • Knowledge of housekeeping tasks for facility sanitation.
Special Requirements and Notes

All prospective candidates will be subject to sex‑offender checks, criminal background checks (state, local, national), and pre‑employment drug screening for direct care positions. DJJ participates in E‑Verify.

Positions requiring transportation of youth must have a valid driver’s license and a three‑year acceptable driving record per FDJJ Policy 1920.
