BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public Works/City Engineer or designee, this position performs professional engineering work in the planning, design, review, and management of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects.
Responsibilities include reviewing and approving construction plans; managing the design and construction of projects related to paving, traffic, drainage, water, wastewater, and vertical infrastructure; and performing full contract administration functions. The position exercises independent judgment and applies advanced technical knowledge to ensure compliance with established engineering standards, regulations, and City policies.
This role requires strong technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and the ability to oversee projects from initial planning through completion.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Thorough technical knowledge of civil engineering
- Knowledge of engineering and design principles applicable to fields
- Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of the assigned discipline
- Knowledge of the applicability of established engineering principles and methods
- Knowledge of the preparation of cost estimates
- Ability to learn and use new software as it becomes available and is needed
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyze engineering problems
- Ability to read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings
- Ability to interpret and make decisions in conformance with established policies and practices
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
Two (2) years of experience in a related field is preferred; OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, may be sufficient.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
A valid Class C Texas driver's license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record
Must have a Professional Engineer's license from the State of Texas or have the ability to obtain it within twelve (12) months from the date of hire
Must be a Certified Flood Plain Manager or have the ability to obtain it within twelve (12) months from the date of hire
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS
Primarily in an indoor environment with the ability to operate outdoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during the summer and winter months.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Standard office equipment, including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, printer, etc.
