Care Flite is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit ambulance service sponsored by Baylor Scott & White Health, JPS Health Network, Methodist Health System, Parkland, and Texas Health Resources. Care Flite provides medical transport by helicopter, airplane, and ground ambulance, and non‑medical transport via wheelchair van.
The Secondary Ground Paramedic provides patient care under the direct supervision of a Primary Paramedic while gaining experience and proficiency in advanced life support practices. This role is designed for newly certified paramedics who are in the process of completing Care Flite’s clearance program to become a Primary Paramedic. The Secondary Paramedic assists in patient assessment, treatment, and transport while prioritizing safety, learning, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities- Assist the Primary Paramedic in delivering emergency and non‑emergency patient care in accordance with Care Flite Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- Support patient assessments, vital signs monitoring, and documentation under supervision.
- Perform basic life support interventions and selected advanced procedures as directed by the Primary Paramedic.
- Responsible for the safe operation of the emergency vehicle in accordance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as Care Flite Policies and Procedures.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of all medical and non‑medical equipment, which is part of the ambulance.
- Perform routine maintenance checks on the assigned vehicle at the beginning of each shift. Reports and documents maintenance performed and service required, if any.
- Assist flight crew in loading and unloading patients for the Care Flite helicopter and for fixed‑wing aircraft. Adheres to all aviation safety requirements in the performance of these duties.
- Responsible for ensuring that Care Flite is perceived by its customers in a positive manner by conducting all interactions in a professional and courteous manner.
- Communicate positively with patients, family members, and medical personnel. Ensures that all individuals involved in the transport are fully informed of pertinent details related to the transport.
- Accommodate family members to the extent possible without jeopardizing the safety of the patient mission or other Care Flite personnel.
- Provide Care Flite Communication center with information required to initiate, track, and close out the mission.
- Meet special medical and/or comfort needs of patients to ensure that their transport is a positive experience.
- Responsible for participating in the delivery of non‑emergency and emergency patient care in accordance with Care Flite Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- Complete appropriate clinical assessment of patients and report medical condition to receiving facility personnel and/or family.
- Complete appropriate records to accurately report patient condition at time of transport and to record services rendered by Care Flite personnel before and during transport.
- Ensure that the assigned vehicle is adequately stocked and cleaned according to Care Flite policies and procedures.
- Actively participate in quality assurance/improvement activities as directed by their supervisor.
- Acquaint yourself with the quality assurance surveys and/or quality improvement projects, which affect their practice, and adhere to the standards or changes implemented.
- Provide feedback in a positive, proactive manner on quality assurance/improvement activities that impact their practice.
- Search out opportunities to utilize their free time while on duty to improve their professional skills or participate in work‑related projects, such as public relations with facilities.
- Identify efficiency or cost‑saving ideas in a timely manner to their immediate supervisor.
- Support assigned partner by sharing in the delivery of patient care, lifting of patients and/or equipment, documentation of transports, and stocking, cleaning, and maintenance of assigned vehicle.
- Focus efforts on supporting their co‑workers at all times.
