Perform routine transportation operations or maintenance support, including roadway maintenance and repair; operate light and heavy equipment; conduct preventive and minor maintenance; traffic control; and assist the public during emergencies. Work involves contact with private entities. Positions follow standard practices with minimal supervision.
- Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; basic welding; move equipment, materials and products as needed.
- Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs, barricades; flag traffic; determine placement of traffic control devices.
- Inspect barricades for compliance; maintain highways and rights-of-way; perform roadway repairs; erect/repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment; remove litter and debris.
- Operate heavy equipment (e.g., motor grader, large excavator, bulldozer, crane, asphalt machines) and light equipment (e.g., front-end loader, roller, broom, backhoe, street sweeper, mower).
- Perform PMI, routine servicing, minor repairs; complete reports (timekeeping, inventory, accidents, PMI).
- Respond to emergencies (floods, snow, storms, accidents, hazmat incidents) and support public safety as directed.
- Inspect traffic control devices for compliance with standards and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintain construction project records and bridge inspection records; process related paperwork; ensure compliance with procedures.
- Perform skilled roadway repairs; erect/repair guard rails, signs; haul materials and equipment.
- Identify, repair, install signs and posts; perform welding; operate/move equipment and tools.
- Assist with traffic control; place/gather cones and signs; flag traffic.
- Conduct tests of highway construction materials and record results; inspect materials and production procedures for compliance.
- Operate additional heavy equipment and perform PMI, routine servicing, and documentation; perform other duties as assigned.
Education
GTT I:
No experience required
GTT II: 1 year experience*
* Experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. May be substituted with related training or education on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license at time of application; must drive a state vehicle.
Must have Commercial Class A CDL with an N Endorsement or obtain CDL A within 120 days of employment.
