JOB SUMMARY:

The Geospatial Data and Digital Research Assistant supports a National Geographic-funded study of historic rice-field and coastal wetland landscapes by designing and implementing the project's historical geospatial database, processing remote-sensing and GIS data, and building an integrated database for archaeological and forestry samples. The employee also curates the project website and maintains clear metadata, documentation, and quality-control procedures so that project data can support analysis, preservation, and public communication.

JOB DUTIES:
  • 35% - Designs, populates, and maintains the project's historical geospatial database by integrating archival records, historical maps and plats, aerial imagery, and existing spatial datasets. Documents the location, extent, chronology, attributes, and source history of historic rice-field and coastal landscape features. Establishes relational tables, data dictionaries, unique identifiers, naming conventions, metadata, provenance fields, and quality-control procedures so that the database supports both project documentation and analysis.
  • 30% - Processes, georeferences, digitizes, analyzes, and visualizes remote-sensing and GIS data, including LiDAR-derived terrain products, aerial or UAV imagery, historical maps, and field-generated spatial data. Develops organized and reproducible geodatabases, spatial layers, and cartographic products documenting the extent, condition, and physical characteristics of historic rice-field and coastal landscapes.
  • 20% - Builds and administers an integrated archaeological and forestry sampling database. Links unique sample identifiers with coordinates, field context, stratigraphy, vegetation or forestry observations, photographs, analytical results, and sample status. Develops standardized data-entry forms, validation rules, and import/export procedures for field, laboratory, and GIS use.
  • 15% - Curates and updates the project website by organizing and publishing accurate project text, maps, photographs, data summaries, methods, and research updates. Maintains consistent formatting, accessibility, source attribution, digital file organization, backups, and documentation in coordination with the project director.

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and work experience in systems development and maintenance, technical support, or the support of database management systems. A bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience.

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL:

Normal Operations - Required to follow emergency facility closure and modified operations directives, and not normally expected to work on-site during emergency situations.
