Reporting to the Project Director, the Academic Counselor will dedicate 100% of the time and effort to the project and will be responsible for recruiting and selecting participants, assessing academic attainment levels, providing career counseling, and supporting participants with ACT test preparation, financial literacy, financial aid application assistance, and postsecondary enrollment application support.
Responsibilities- Recruit and select at least 1,000 participants.
- Assess academic attainment levels, educational needs, and career interests of assigned participants.
- Administer career interest surveys and other assessments.
- Travel throughout six of the twelve counties within the service area to facilitate workshops and provide services.
- Provide ACT test preparation, financial literacy, financial aid application assistance and postsecondary enrollment application support.
- Administer surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of workshops and services.
- Provide academic advising and make referrals for assigned participants.
- Monitor academic progress and maintain both physical and digital case management files.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Director.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Experience in adult and/or underrepresented participants’ education programs.
- Valid driver’s license and access to an insured motor vehicle for business use.
- Availability to attend meetings, conferences or special events after normal work hours and on weekends.
- Experience in working with federally‑funded programs.
- Experience in public promotion to persons from all socioeconomic conditions and communities.
- Experience with education and career assessment tools and programs.
- Personal experience in overcoming or understanding disadvantages and circumstances similar to the population served by the program.
- A commitment to working with diverse populations in the Mississippi Delta, especially economically disadvantaged populations, including low‑income young adults, first‑generation students, students with a disability, and non‑traditional students.
Salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and university resources.
