Why This Role Matters

Historic structures tell the story of our communities and preserving them is essential to cultural heritage. As a mid-level Consultant, Architectural Historian
, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring these stories endure while supporting responsible development across the United States. The hire will be attached to an ERM office in the Atlantic Central or Great Lakes Northeast Business Unit with preference being given to Pittsburgh, PA, Cleveland, OH, Rolling Meadows, IL, or Minneapolis, MN. Other geographies will be considered for the ideal candidate.

Your Impact Is
  • Lead field surveys of historic structures and architectural resources.
  • Evaluate properties for National Register of Historic Places eligibility.
  • Assess project effects under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Contribute to planning, logistics, and reporting that influence major infrastructure and development projects.
  • Collaborate with a team of experts to deliver high-quality cultural resource solutions.
What You’ll Bring Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or related field (Master’s preferred). Or equivalent experience.
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for professional qualifications in Architectural History or Historic Architecture.
  • 2–4 years of experience in surveying and evaluating historic architectural resources.
  • Strong knowledge of architectural styles, materials, and NRHP analysis.
  • Understanding of visual APE and how it is refined based on the project and permitting standards.
  • Excellent writing skills with attention to detail and QA/QC experience.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied conditions.
  • Willingness to work weekends or overtime when needed.
  • Ability to travel frequently and on short notice.
  • Driver's License

    Required:

    This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • Periodic drug and alcohol testing required.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with federal and state agency requirements (USACE, SCC, NPS, FERC, FCC, DEQ).
  • Experience with digital SLR photography, GIS, graphics, or database tools.
  • Comfort navigating rural environments and engaging with the public.
Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, and conduct surveys of above-ground historic properties.
  • Document and photograph buildings, structures, and other historic resources.
  • Prepare detailed cultural resource reports and state-specific forms.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Support project planning, logistics, and administrative tasks as needed.

For the Consultant, Architectural Historian position, the anticipated annual base pay is $75,603 – $94,924 (USD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
