Job DescriptionProvides medical assisting instruction appropriate to the Standards and Guidelines established by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Coordinates and evaluates the students’ clinical instructional processes and activities. Maintains effective communication with applicants, students, graduates, faculty and instructors. Serves a liaison between College and community health care agencies, professional organizations and other network entities vital to the Medical Assisting Program.
Performs didactic instruction and evaluation for program courses. Provides input for needs assessment, continued development, accreditation and outcome assessment of the Medical Assisting Program. Responsibilities also include advising students, maintaining office hours, and participating in course preparation and evaluation, the ability to teach the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains, and participating in advisory committee meetings.
- Prepares and delivers lectures to students on various topics in relation to a specific discipline
- Evaluates and grades students’ class work, laboratory work, assignments and papers
- Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts
- May be assigned to teach courses on campus or at partner high schools, conduct adjunct instructor observations, and contribute to program development
- Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, speaking with colleagues and participating in professional conferences
- Maintains student attendance records, grades and other required records
- Initiates, facilitates and moderates classroom discussions
- As needed, advises students on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues
- Plans, evaluates and revises curricula, course content and course materials and methods of instruction
- Compiles, administers and grades examinations
- Collaborates with colleagues to address teaching and research issues
- Maintains regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students
- Selects and obtains materials and supplies such as textbooks and laboratory equipment
- May serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, department matters and academic issues
- May participate in campus and community events
- Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline
- Graduate of an education program in Surgical Technology from a CAAHEP accredited program
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) with a minimum of three years practicing as a surgical technologist
- Current operating room experience in the scrub role and/or current experience as an instructor in surgical technology
- Demonstrated instruction for surgical technology students
- Current member of the Association of Surgical Technology (AST)
- Sensitivity to appropriately respond to the needs of a diverse population
- Teaching experience
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Suite (or equivalent)
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for students
- Advanced communication (verbal, written and interpersonal) and organizational skills
- Logic and reasoning skills to identify solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
- Sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of a diverse population
- Master’s degree in a related discipline
- Community college teaching experience
Lectureship term: One Academic Year, classes beginning in Fall 2026. Ability to work a combination of days/evenings/weekends is required. Assignments may include working at multiple sites/campuses.
