Summary
John Carroll University's Department of Psychology Clinical Instructor has the responsibilities of an experienced behavior analyst and must have the knowledge of and adherence to the professional, legal, and ethical standards which govern behavior analysts. Individuals are also accountable to follow the policies and maintain the standards as outlined by the John Carroll University, Department of Psychology, and those set forth by the clinical agency in which they are overseeing students in the Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis program.

Prepare graduate students to successfully complete the John Carroll University Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis curriculum as an extension of the lead course faculty. The Clinical Instructor oversees and provides feedback during fieldwork/onsite service delivery as outlined by the program's clinical handbook. Additionally, the Clinical Instructor supports and supervises the student in the clinical practice and assists the student in developing clinical judgment at the direction of the lead course faculty.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Models professional behavior and standards of practice.
- Utilizes current evidence based practices while teaching students in the clinical setting.
- Establishes rapport and maintains necessary communication with JCU Fieldwork Coordinator, student, and site personnel.
- Participates in university orientation as required by John Carroll University.
- Provides 25 hours direct supervision to the assigned student over the course of the semester
(approximately 5 months). - Represent the John Carroll University professionally and appropriately at all times.
- Supports the mission and vision of John Carroll University and use as a guide for actions.
- Provide ongoing verbal and or written feedback to students on progress in clinical setting using JCU supervision progress reports on a predetermined schedule set forth by the supervision coordinator.
- Reports to the Fieldwork Coordinator and/or Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis Program Director as well as collaborates with the lead course faculty.
- Performance evaluations are completed in accordance with provisions of the John Carroll University Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis Fieldwork Handbook.
1) Demonstrate Competent Behavior Analytic Practices.
- Be accountable to follow the ethical and professional guidelines.
- Be responsible and accountable for practice based on, and limited to, the scope of
instructor's education, demonstrated competence, and behavior analytic experience. - Possess thorough knowledge current behavior analytic practices.
- Has knowledge of and utilizes assent based practices.
- Obtain instruction, supervision, and consultation as necessary before implementing new or unfamiliar techniques or practices.
- Maintain knowledge in current, best evidence influencing clinical nursing practice in
the area of specialty. - Conduct behavior analytic practice without discrimination.
- Respect client 's right to privacy by protecting confidential information.
- Review course syllabi with students to gain an understanding of assignments that need to be completed that semester.
- Complete student evaluations on monthly, bi-semester, semester basis.
- Meet with the lead course instructor to review student evaluations of the clinical instructor to grow in teaching effectiveness.
- Direct, instruct, and guide students in the clinical setting. Assign students weekly to selected patients based on the student's learning needs and patient assessment.
- Assist students in collecting pertinent objective and subjective data regarding
patient health status. - Engage students in comprehensive, individualized instruction in the observation,
assessment, decision-making, and health teaching of patients, including the
maintenance of patient health or prevention of illness or disease. - Facilitate development of student's critical thinking, technical, and professional
communication skills while maintaining patient and student safety and patient
confidentiality. - Assist students in using the nursing process when providing care.
- Supervise the administration of medications. Delegate selected nursing functions to
students in accordance with their level of nursing education and demonstrated
competency based on Benner's Novice to Expert criteria. - Provide students with written instructions for what to do in case of injury or illness in the
clinical setting. - Participate in course delivery, skills lab, and simulation as needed.
