Job Summary
Full‑time faculty positions (Assistant, Associate, Full Professor) in the Center for Civics, Culture and Society at Cleveland State University, starting August 17 2026.
The Center focuses on teaching and research on the historical ideas, traditions, and texts that have shaped the American constitutional order and society.
Successful candidates will teach the flagship introductory course The American Regime
, covering philosophical foundations of the United States, the American Founding, equality and civil liberties, economics, religion, and contemporary cultural and political issues. Required readings include The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, selections from Adam Smith’s _The Wealth of Nations_, the Federalist Papers, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.
In addition to The American Regime, candidates will teach introductory and upper‑level undergraduate courses in their fields, conduct scholarship, and contribute to the Center, the university, and the Greater Cleveland community. The teaching load is 3‑3.
Minimum Qualifications- Expertise in a field relevant to the Center (e.g., political science, philosophy, economics, law, history, classics, literature).
- For Assistant Professor: ABD status in a terminal degree program (ABD candidates may be hired at Instructor rank).
- For Assistant Professor: coherent plan for future scholarship.
- For Associate or Full Professor: conferred terminal degree in a relevant field.
- For Associate or Full Professor: record of scholarly achievement and a coherent plan for future scholarship.
- Conferred terminal degree in a relevant field.
- Undergraduate teaching experience (preferred for Assistant Professor).
- Documented record of teaching excellence (preferred for Associate or Full Professor).
