Open Date DescriptionThis position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Curriculum and serves as the primary leader for the four-year arc of clinical education for the WR2/UP medical students.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee the entire arc of clinical education from matriculation to graduation. This includes oversight and contribution to Block 8:
Foundations of Clinical Medicine and all its components (FCM Seminars, Clinical Skills Curriculum, Communications Curriculum, Clinical Reasoning) - Manage and mentor the Block 8 FCM leaders, including the FCM Seminars co-leaders, the FCM Director of Communications Curriculum, and the FCM Director of Clinical Skills Curriculum.
- Collaborate with the Director of Assessment and oversee the clinical component of the third-year Clinical Skills Exam (CSE3) for all CWRU SOM students (WR2/UP and LCP).
- Coordinate clinical education enhancements, including BLS and ACLS certifications for medical students (M2 and M4) and the Transition to Residency Program (M4).
- Serve as a design team member with special focus on integration of clinical skills, including clinical reasoning across the curriculum to enhance preclerkship content, the clinical clerkships, and clinical electives
- Periodically attend relevant class sessions (e.g., FCM seminars, Communication Workshops, Physical Diagnosis sessions, SAMI, etc.) for purposes of session evaluation, improvement and curricular integration.
- Provide input to the Office of Assessment on the generation and improvement of formative and summative assessments for clinical skills of medical students. Provide oversight of student remediation efforts for clinical skills.
- Attend weekly Assistant Dean meetings; monthly Joint Clinical Oversight Group, Western Reserve2 Curriculum Committee, Committee on Medical Education; periodic Program Evaluation Committee and Continuous Quality Improvement; annual Medical Education Retreat, and annual Block Leaders and Clerkship Directors Retreats.
- Present an annual evaluation of the longitudinal clinical education programs with an action plan for improvement for the following year to the WR2 Curriculum Committee.
- Work closely with the Associate Dean for Curriculum to document clinical skills and communications data for LCME Accreditation efforts.

- Flexibility and adaptability with a willingness to adjust plans based on feedback and changing circumstances

Support
This position will provide 0.3 FTE support from the Office of Medical Education. Administrative support for the Assistant Dean includes:
- The resources of the Office of Curricular Affairs
- Office space in the Health Education Campus
- Travel funds: $3,000/academic year to support travel to professional meetings relevant to your educational role
Performance Evaluation
Prior to the annual performance evaluation, you will submit a self-assessment to the Vice Dean of Medical Education summarizing your performance in your role as Assistant Dean. At a minimum, this will include documentation of:
- Effective leadership for pre-clerkship and longitudinal clinical skills training across the 4-year medical education program.
- Curriculum program improvements and outcomes
- Evidence of scholarship and dissemination of educational innovations, either by you or those you mentor (faculty members or students).
