Building Substitute Teacher

Locations:
Caledonia Elementary School, Prospect Academy, W.H. Kirk Middle School, and Shaw High School

Position

Purpose:

East Cleveland City School District is seeking dedicated, flexible, and student-centered individuals to serve as Building Substitute Teachers. Building Substitutes are assigned to a specific school building and provide instructional support by covering classrooms during teacher absences. This position offers consistency by working in the same building each day while supporting students and staff in maintaining a positive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Report to the assigned school each workday as scheduled.
• Provide classroom instruction in the absence of the regular teacher using lesson plans provided.
• Maintain a safe, orderly, and productive classroom environment.
• Supervise students throughout the instructional day and during assigned duties.
• Follow district curriculum, instructional expectations, and school procedures.
• Maintain accurate attendance and classroom records as required.
• Collaborate professionally with administrators, teachers, and support staff.
• Demonstrate flexibility by covering various grade levels and subject areas as needed.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student and district information.
• Uphold all East Cleveland City School District Board policies and administrative procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Ohio Substitute Teaching License or Ohio Educator License.
• Current BCI/FBI background checks as required by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a classroom.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and administrators.

Preferred

Qualification:

• Previous classroom teaching or substitute teaching experience.
• Experience working in an urban school district.
• Ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining high expectations.

• Effective classroom management skills.
• Strong organizational and time management abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing assignments and instructional needs.
• Commitment to student achievement and educational excellence.
• Ability to use instructional technology and classroom management systems.

Working Conditions:

• Assigned exclusively to one school building throughout the school year.
• Ability to stand, walk, and actively supervise students throughout the day.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds as needed.
• Work is performed in a school environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, and families.
• Must possess the physical and mental ability to perform essential job functions.

Terms of Employment:

• school year
• August 2026 - May 2027

Salary: ECEA Master Agreement
