Kenyon College Internship in Museum Education

The Education Art Collection (EAC) at the Cleveland Museum of Art invites applications for a dynamic and immersive Summer 2026 internship. This opportunity, which includes developing educational materials and assisting with object-based, hands-on programming is ideal for students interested in museum education, works on paper, and object-based learning within one of the nation’s leading art museums.

The EAC comprises approximately 10,000 authentic works of art spanning more than 6,000 years and representing cultures from around the world. Used extensively in educational programs, the collection supports hands-on, object-based learning experiences for audiences of all ages. The EAC team is responsible for the care, research, documentation, and educational use of the collection, as well as for developing innovative programs that connect people directly with original works of art.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Education Art Collection, the intern will contribute to a wide range of educational initiatives and collection-based projects. A major focus of the internship will be the creation of educational resources to accompany “process kits” centered on works on paper. The intern will research EAC objects and authentic materials and techniques related to watercolors, engravings, etchings, and woodcuts, and will develop teaching guides, didactic materials, and hands‑on learning tools to support educational programming and upcoming exhibitions.

This work will significantly enhance collection documentation in the museum’s Athena database and strengthen EAC programs in FY27 and beyond. Additionally, the intern will assist in the CMA’s summer camp involving EAC objects, as well as other Art to Go and Art Up Close programs.

Throughout the summer, the intern will develop foundational museum skills, including art handling, object-based research, and the use of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Ingalls Library. They will gain in-depth knowledge of how works on paper are made, how educational displays are created, and how museum educators translate complex artistic processes into accessible and engaging learning experiences.

Two-thirds of the intern’s time will be spent learning about art processes, examining and researching relevant objects, writing teaching guides, creating didactic materials, and creating temporary displays. In addition to research and resource development, the intern will gain valuable experience working directly with the public. Approximately one-third of the internship will involve assisting with EAC-led Summer Camp programs-where participants engage with authentic works of art-as well as the Art to Go program, which brings museum learning to offsite community locations.

Through these experiences, the intern will learn best practices for teaching with original artworks and supporting diverse audiences in both on-site and off-site settings.

• Students from all academic majors are eligible. Students majoring in the humanities, particularly in the fields of art, art history, anthropology, education, history, or a related field are encouraged to apply

The internship is 28 hrs./week for nine weeks. The internship provides a $6,000 stipend which includes compensation and housing support. Stipends is paid in a lump sum directly to the student by Kenyon College and is considered taxable income.
