Elementary Music Teacher

We are seeking a passionate and dynamic elementary music teacher to join our team of dedicated educators. The successful candidate will provide diverse opportunities for students to develop aesthetic sensitivity, nurture self-esteem, increase career awareness, and encourage active and thoughtful participation in music. As a teacher of Garfield Heights City Schools, you should have a passion for working with students in an urban community and a strong commitment to cultivating creativity, collaboration, and musical excellence.

Essential functions include ensuring the safety and well-being of all students, effectively managing the classroom and individual student behavior, preparing clear, timely, and engaging lesson plans aligned to Ohio state content standards, maintaining accurate and complete records, providing guidance to promote students' educational, cultural, and social-emotional development, attending and actively participating in parent/teacher conferences, collaborating and communicating effectively with colleagues, assessing student learning regularly and adjusting instruction accordingly, providing complete lesson plans for substitutes, establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with parents through effective communication, creating a classroom environment conducive to learning, assisting administration in implementing procedures and rules governing student life, following the scope and sequence of the instructional program, taking necessary precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities, demonstrating strong knowledge of music content and presenting clear, accurate instruction using varied instructional techniques and media, being present at all required practices and performances, coordinating music with drama for seasonal programs and graduation ceremonies, overseeing and teaching music for assemblies and special programs, teaching music reading, vocal production, rhythm, movement, and stage presence, selecting developmentally appropriate music for each grade level, auditioning students for musical productions as needed, keeping current with trends in music and arts education, assisting in planning and revising the comprehensive music curriculum, planning activities to meet individual student needs and support grade-level curriculum, maintaining confidentiality, attending meetings and professional development, incorporating positive behavior supports into daily practice, observing the ethics of the teaching profession.

Other duties and responsibilities include promoting positive public relations for the school and district, serving as a role model for students, participating on building-level, teacher-based, and/or district-level teams, performing assigned duties, responding to routine questions and requests in a timely and appropriate manner, assisting in the selection of music textbooks, instruments, and instructional materials, participating in committees, study teams, and co-curricular activities, participating in intervention assistance team meetings, maintaining and improving professional competence through workshops and seminars, supervising student teachers as assigned, counseling, advising, encouraging, and motivating students.

About you:

Active and current state of Ohio teaching license in the appropriate content area, bachelor's degree in music education or a related field from an accredited college or university, prior experience teaching instrumental music and directing school bands is preferred, demonstrated ability to lead and manage various ensembles, comfortable working in a performance-based teaching environment with responsibilities including rehearsals, concerts, parades, competitions, and civic events, high level of comfort working in a collaborative, feedback-rich setting involving observations, coaching, and reflection, strong classroom management skills and an ability to motivate and engage students through music, knowledge of child development and age-appropriate instructional methods for music education, proficient in using music education technology, excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, capable of supervising students in a variety of school settings, basic first aid knowledge, must be able to pass both federal and state criminal background checks, experience working in an urban school environment is highly valued.

The Garfield Heights City Schools collaboratively and cooperatively serve students and families of the City of Garfield Heights. Located in Cuyahoga County and bordered on the north by the City of Cleveland proper, and on all other sides by the first ring communities of Northeast Ohio.
