New Teacher & Resident Educator Mentor
Qualifications- Evidence of strong leadership qualities and the ability to build positive, supportive, and professional relationships with teachers.
- Must be a current East Cleveland City School District staff member who holds a valid Ohio teaching certificate/license.
- Has at least one successful year of experience as a mentor in the District, or experience as a cooperating teacher for student teachers or field-placement students.
- Has at least three consecutive years of successful teaching experience in the East Cleveland City School District.
- Has demonstrated above-average teaching performance and professional practice.
- Has completed, or is willing to complete, required Instructional Mentoring Training and Resident Educator Mentor Training.
- Willing to attend additional District and/or state-required training related to new teacher mentoring, Resident Educator mentoring, and professional development.
- Demonstrates knowledge of effective instructional methods, classroom management, assessment practices, student engagement, and the professional responsibilities necessary to improve teaching and increase student learning.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the unique needs and challenges of teachers who are new to the profession, new to East Cleveland City Schools, and/or participating in the Resident Educator Program.
- Possesses strong communication, collaboration, coaching, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide constructive, timely, and specific feedback while maintaining a supportive mentoring relationship.
- Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates professionalism when working with New Teachers, Resident Educators, mentors, administrators, and other District personnel.
- Has knowledge of, or is willing to develop knowledge of, Resident Educator Program requirements and RESA expectations.
- When applicable, has experience assisting Resident Educators with RESA preparation and tasks leading to successful completion of the assessment.
- Interviews will be conducted for this position.
- Provide ongoing mentoring, coaching, guidance, and professional support to assigned New Teachers and Resident Educators throughout the school year.
- Establish positive, trusting, confidential, and professional mentor/mentee relationships that promote teacher growth, reflection, confidence, and effectiveness.
- Assist New Teachers and Resident Educators with their transition into East Cleveland City Schools, including understanding District expectations, school procedures, instructional priorities, professional responsibilities, available resources, and organizational culture.
- Maintain regular, purposeful contact with assigned New Teachers and Resident Educators, and provide additional support during critical periods of the school year.
- Support Resident Educators in understanding and successfully meeting applicable requirements of the Resident Educator Program.
- Assist Resident Educators with understanding RESA expectations, timelines, requirements, and preparation activities, as applicable.
- Assist Resident Educators with preparation for RESA tasks while ensuring that mentoring support maintains the integrity of the assessment process and applicable requirements.
- Help New Teachers and Resident Educators develop effective classroom routines, procedures, classroom management practices, and strategies to create safe, supportive, and productive learning environments.
- Support New Teachers and Resident Educators in lesson planning, standards-based instruction, instructional delivery, differentiation, student engagement, assessment, and the use of student data to inform instruction.
- Assist mentees in understanding District curriculum, instructional frameworks, technology platforms, assessment expectations, intervention processes, and available instructional resources.
- Provide instructional coaching and mentoring designed to strengthen planning and preparation, classroom environment, instructional delivery and design, assessment practices, and professional responsibilities.
- Model effective instructional practices and, when appropriate, facilitate opportunities for observation, demonstration, reflection, collaborative planning, and professional feedback.
- Work with administrators to develop mechanisms for mentors and mentees to give and receive timely, specific, actionable feedback on instructional practices and professional growth.
- Work collaboratively with administrators to develop effective communication techniques and structures that strengthen New Teacher/Resident Educator and mentor relationships.
- Help facilitate professional development experiences purposefully designed to address the identified needs and concerns of New Teachers, Resident Educators, and mentors.
