Engineering Co-op

Our Mining Engineering Co-ops work in Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH underground salt mine locations as part of our CPS business unit. There you will learn to lead production or maintenance employees, project teams, contractors or technical operations teams executing on critical initiatives and projects in a fast-paced, underground environment. The role provides exposure to the people management and technical components of the mining industry.

The intent is to expose individuals to the technical and management aspects of engineering while developing longer-term career aspirations.

Your Work

Our Mining Engineer Co-ops will gain experience in Operations Leadership and/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering. Potential full-time paths include:

  • Mining Engineers – Work underground with engineers and crews on active projects and on surface support, learning mining techniques such as surveying and mapping, room and pillar mining, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and mining safety. You will work with team members on engineering tasks and may lead your own projects.
  • Electrical Engineers – Exposure to high voltage power infrastructure and programming/control systems. Learn to operate and automate equipment, with a focus on reliability in mining environments.
  • Production Management Engineers – Lead people, processes and materials in mining settings. Involve in supervision, MSHA regulations, environmental/health/safety programs, and process improvement. May lead capital projects.
  • Process/Project Engineering – Responsible for business case development, vendor selection, budget and project management for process optimization, safety, quality, and energy use; collaborate with global groups.

Co‑op details
  • Co-ops are typically 7-8 months in duration.
  • Co-ops are paid hourly for time worked.
  • Co-ops are responsible for transportation to and from work.
  • Must be able to work in an underground environment.
  • Must be open to relocation to Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY.
  • Team-oriented, fast-paced, hands-on plant environment focused on engagement and innovation.
  • Opportunity to showcase skills on projects from designing/upgrading systems to updating plant drawings.
  • Physical requirements:

    regular moderate exertion, bending, lifting up to 50+ pounds and other conditions (heat, cold, salt dust, etc.).
