Materials Engineer

This role is responsible for providing materials and failure analysis support across products, materials, and manufacturing processes of complex scope. The engineer will evaluate technical and cost factors, recommend engineering and manufacturing actions, and support design objectives for aerospace thermal management and gas turbine fuel systems. This position coordinates and conducts materials research, development, and failure investigations while partnering closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and customers.

• Perform materials and processes research and development to support new configurations, new product development, and product introductions for thermal management and gas turbine fuel systems, including manifolds, valves, and fuel nozzles.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in materials processing and joining technologies, including heat treatment, vacuum and induction brazing, GTAW, electron beam and laser welding, forgings, castings, coatings, and chemical processing methods.
• Lead and support materials failure investigations, including metallographic preparation and evaluation, SEM/EDS analysis, fatigue and stress analysis, fracture mechanics and fractography, and corrosion analysis.
• Provide materials and metallurgical support to engineering, manufacturing, quality, management, and customers as needed.
• Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of metallurgical behavior and performance of iron-base alloys, stainless steels, nickel-, cobalt-, titanium-, aluminum-based alloys, and composite materials.
• Support raw material processing efforts across metallics, ceramics, and composites, including additive manufacturing of stainless steels, aluminum, nickel-base superalloys, and non-metallic materials.
• Interface directly with customers to provide guidance on material selection, manufacturability, and process capabilities related to system interfaces and operating environments.
• Support production operations by improving process yields and reducing scrap through laboratory analysis and Six Sigma–driven investigations.
• Prepare comprehensive, clear, and concise technical reports using MS Office applications and deliver findings through stand-up or virtual presentations.
• Apply working knowledge of AS9100, Nadcap, and FAA regulations and contribute to continuous improvement of quality management processes.
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related discipline; process engineering knowledge required.
• Minimum of six (6) years of related experience, including 3–5 years focused on materials failure analysis using advanced equipment and techniques (e.g., SEM, EDS, BSE, ESEM) within the aerospace industry.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in non-ferrous metallurgy, including nickel-base, cobalt-base, titanium, aluminum, and corrosion- and oxidation-resistant alloys.
• Proven ability to work effectively within cross-functional engineering and quality teams with diverse technical backgrounds.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and schedules to meet internal and external customer demands.
