Responsibilities

Primary Purpose of Job

Under the SAIP Senior Metallurgist, this position is responsible for providing technical support for the creation of new processes and new items, optimizing existing processes to improve properties and reduce cost/lead time, reviewing process deviations to disposition product, responding to customer requests, writing and reviewing technical documents, writing technical reports to qualify new products/processes, reviewing technical specifications for compliance, and supporting industry (AS9100, NADCAP, etc), supplier and customer audits in order to meet Howmet's business objectives.

This position does not directly supervise other personnel. The incumbent communicates with all levels of management within the Operations, Supply Chain & Logistics, and Commercial Departments, as well as with other Quality and Metallurgical personnel. Externally, they communicate with customers, external auditors and suppliers.

Accountability Objectives
  • Reviewing test release and supplier certification results, regarding product and disposition, to ensure the achievement of production goals.
  • Providing technical expertise to the metallographic analysis of the material and processes of Howmet Products.
  • Determining the acceptability of structural features of metallographic samples from production forgings.
  • Communicating and creating new part qualifications and necessary technical requirements, including review and implementation of customer specification flow down for both technical and quality systems requirements, to Production teams before approving the release of a respective product. Preparing documentation for customer qualification approval to ensure on-time delivery. Maintaining and updating manufacturing and technology instruction manuals, as necessary.
  • Converting, translating, and communicating specified customer requirements to Production and other Technical Design, Quality and Process Engineering staff, such as test quantity and numerical value to assure that all requirements are met. Evaluating test results in comparison to customer requirements.
  • Implementing continuous improvement and stability activities for critical processes.
  • Developing and maintaining Quality Assurance programs, specifications, procedures, and equipment to meet customer specifications and Howmet quality requirements. Auditing internal and external processes to these requirements.
  • Interfacing with customer representatives on Howmet product and metallurgical quality issues.
  • Interfacing outside suppliers to monitor changes in stated requirements to ensure compliance and performing onsite audits at suppliers as needed.
  • Assisting the Chief Metallurgist in material and process development programs.
  • Working in conjunction with, as well as guiding and supporting Production teams to meet on-time delivery requirements and schedules.
  • Supporting continuous customer and industry audits, in addition to all quality system certifications.
  • Creating and providing training to operators in specialized positions such as thermal processing and final inspection.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution, or a minimum 8 years of metallurgical manufacturing experience in aluminum, titanium, steel, or nickel‑base wrought products.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e., "Green Card Holder"), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications
