Job Summary

Under direct supervision of a qualified Certifier, the Product Safety Engineer completes certification projects and related tasks primarily of a non‑complex nature. The engineer makes assisted technical decisions based on knowledge, training and experience on certification and testing to maintain the integrity of CSA Global Certification programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conducts construction evaluation, ensuring the unit complies with the construction section of the standard; identifies rationale for compliance or non‑compliance.
  • Collaborates with Lab Technician to create a work order specifying the required tests and the order and number of samples.
  • Classifies product by use, environment and function. Determines the applicable requirements, tests, standards, sample requirements and method or location for testing that best suits the customer’s needs. Conducts pre‑assessment with mentor assistance to ensure the unit has the proper components and matches the construction indicated on the work order and submittal information.
  • Works with mentor to ensure completion of projects within deadline. With mentor assistance, evaluates products against national and/or international standards, prepares work orders for the test program, and collaborates with Lab personnel to determine applicable tests. Assists test staff and performs tests when required.
  • Prepares findings communications, certification reports, certificates of compliance and other related CSA documentation for the mentor.
  • Suggests new client opportunities to the sales team as appropriate to support growth.
  • Prepares project quotations for cost and time. Classifies product by use, environment and function, determines applicable requirements, tests, standards, and with supervision sets sample requirements, method and location for testing/evaluation best suited to the customer’s needs.
  • Explains the different product certification programs available to clients and the requirements for control of production.
  • Provides client feedback to mentor, manager, team leader, project holder or sales representative as appropriate.
  • Performs within established DQD guidelines.
  • Prepares test lab work orders and special testing documentation.
  • Provides necessary guidance to lab technicians to ensure proper application of requirements and that data collection methods are in line.
  • Sets up and operates all test equipment within an assigned product area with supervision.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the test method for common tests and the ability to correctly specify a test plan.
  • Demonstrates the ability to record and report evaluation, tests and calculations capturing all relevant data required by each standard with supervision.
  • Conducts witness test programs at manufacturer’s accredited laboratory as needed with supervision.
Preferred Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with 0–2 years of job‑related experience or
  • Certified Engineering Technologist, Journeyman Electrician or equivalent industry experience with likely 3 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, including operating principles and calibration procedures, and general laboratory procedures.
