A well‑established, mission‑driven nonprofit organization in Cleveland is seeking a Director of Finance to serve as its chief financial strategist. This is an executive‑level opportunity for a seasoned nonprofit finance leader who wants their work to matter — not just on the balance sheet, but in the community.
The RoleReporting directly to the Executive Director and serving as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee, the Director of Finance owns the full financial health of a $20M organization. You will lead a team, guide strategy, ensure compliance, and translate complex financial data into clear narratives that drive smart decisions. This role functions at the CFO level — strategic, visible, and deeply embedded in organizational leadership.
WhatYou’ll Own
- Financial strategy, long‑range planning, forecasting, and scenario modeling
- Oversee full accounting operations: GL integrity, AP/AR, payroll, cash flow, month‑ and year‑end close
- Annual budgeting process in partnership with executive and program leadership
- Monthly and quarterly financial reporting to the Executive Director, Board, and Finance Committee
- Annual audit coordination and external auditor relationship
- Compliance with all federal, state, and funder regulations — including federally funded program requirements
- Internal controls — rigorous, non‑negotiable, and consistently enforced
- Leadership and development of a team of three (with a fourth hire to follow)
- Have 15+ years of progressive finance or accounting experience, including team leadership
- Have deep nonprofit accounting expertise — federally funded organizations strongly preferred
- Translate numbers into stories, and present with confidence to a board
- Hold internal controls as a professional standard, not a checkbox
- Are collaborative by nature but confident enough to hold your ground
- Are energized by mission — justice, equity, and access to opportunity mean something to you
- Have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; CPA or advanced degree a plus

- 140,000 – 195,000 salary, commensurate with experience
