Cleveland-Cliffs is looking for a Manager of Indirect Tax to directly manage indirect tax compliance, planning, and audit inquiries and controversies. Indirect taxes include real and personal property, sales/use, excise, GST/HST, commercial activity, and other state and local taxes on operating activities. The role works with Senior Tax Analysts and Tax Analysts in multiple locations to develop, train and provide guidance on indirect taxes.
The Manager will interface with employees at the CCI plant locations, other CCI departments, and, where applicable, external advisors.
- Directly manage and ensure accuracy in the preparation and timely submission of all indirect tax returns, payments, and supporting work papers and files for CCI entities.
- Develop projections of current and future CCI indirect taxes (expense / liabilities / assets) used in financial statements and business forecasts.
- Manage tax planning activities to minimize indirect tax liabilities, including identification of opportunities, abatement incentives, proposal development, and risk assessment.
- Manage indirect tax audits and inquiries, including correspondence with exam teams, preparation of defense positions, tax submissions, protests, appeals, and representation at meetings and hearings.
- Develop and document Company indirect tax positions and provide guidance on complex issues.
- Train and develop Senior Tax Analysts and Tax Analysts, providing peer guidance.
- Coordinate with external indirect tax advisors and consultants on special projects.
- Identify and implement process improvements, including maximizing software use.
- Participate on quality improvement teams.
- Occasional travel to other CCI locations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- At least 6 years of experience in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm working directly on the preparation and review of complex indirect tax returns.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance required.
- Strong knowledge of indirect tax rules and concepts.
- Proficient in Onesource Property Tax or similar software used in the preparation of property tax returns.
- Strong technology skills, knowledge of information systems and financial systems (Oracle, SAP, Hyperion, Sage fixed assets).
- Excellent technical, organizational, analytical, communication and learning skills.
- Strong written communication with clarity, organization, and grammar, and effective oral communication in individual and group settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to high-performance standards, initiative, and professionalism.
- Ability to work independently in an agile environment.
- Strong employee and team coaching, mentoring, and development skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills, fostering understanding, respect, and conflict resolution.
- CPA license.
- CMI in Property Tax and/or Sales Tax.
The salary range for this role is $115,000 - $145,000. The Company offers total compensation including variable compensation opportunities, health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more.
