Legal Counsel
Summary
Responsible for preparing Court ordered mental health assessments. The issues to be addressed will include:
Emergency Hospitalization, Competency to Stand Trial, Sanity at the Time of the Act, Mitigation of Penalty, Domestic Violence/Risk Assessment, etc.
- Perform psychological tests, prepare evaluations for the Court, and testify in court regarding psychological evaluations of defendants.
- Prepare written reports in a timely manner.
- Work with judges, probation officers, court personnel, and various agencies.
- Provide quality service that continuously improves, meets or exceeds public expectations, and ensures all are treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
- Familiarity with severe mental disorders and developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge of the law concerning mental health disorders.
- Ability to integrate clinical and factual data with applicable legal standards.
- Ability to diagnose mental health disorders consistent with current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective time management, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to organize and prioritize duties.
- Knowledge of Ohio law regarding competency, sanity, violence risk assessments, mitigation, etc.
- Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information at the highest ethical standards.
- Use knowledge of law and psychiatry to perform forensic evaluations of defendants.
- Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn and work with custom software used within the Psychiatric Clinic department and the Court.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally.
- Perform a variety of other related duties as required.
Medical Degree with a license to practice in the State of Ohio as a Psychiatrist. At least three years of work experience in the area of forensic psychiatry is required.

The employee is expected to model high ethical conduct on and off the job and exhibit a professional and respectful demeanor with all Court employees.
Application ProcessQualified applicants will be required to submit to testing and may be required to provide writing samples. Proof of education and employment references will be required before final interview. Employment is predicated upon successful completion of a criminal record check and drug testing. The applicant will be considered a probationary employee for the first 180 days of employment.
