Advanced Practice RN Provider – Life Flight

Location: METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER

Shift: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Metro Health System, a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, seeks an advanced practice registered nurse to join our growing Life Flight team. The provider delivers direct patient care consistent with advanced practice nurse education, experience, and certification, in collaboration with a physician. Responsibilities include diagnosis, management and referral of health care issues, promotion of consumer, family and community health through preventative actions and patient advocacy, and management of complex illnesses.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to patient safety: create safe environment, report safety concerns, participate in system improvement initiatives, provide evidence‑based care.
  • Clinical Practice
    • Perform patient assessment, document and analyze data based on patient needs.
    • Utilize critical thinking to formulate differential diagnoses and prioritize care.
    • Implement measures to promote health, prevent illness and maintain comfort.
    • Develop evidence‑based plan of care and collaborate with other health‑care providers.
    • Provide care that enhances patient satisfaction and promotes positive public relations.
    • Select communication approaches to achieve desired outcomes and address barriers.
    • Accept accountability for clinical practice, making proactive decisions and representing patient needs.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, national standards, The Metro Health System Code of Ethical Conduct and ANA Code of Ethics.
    • Prescribe drugs and therapeutic devices within scope of practice if holding Certificate to Prescribe.
    • Understand flight physiology and take appropriate actions regarding patient care.
    • Collaborate with the Nurse Manager, Metro Life Flight Professional Practice Committee and medical directors to evaluate and improve practice.
    • Maintain availability via provided hospital pager for programmatic needs.
    • Perform prehospital scene surveys, ensure safety of patient and crew, and coordinate triage.
    • Evaluate patient care within scope of flight nurse practitioner using protocols and physician collaboration.
    • Maintain current knowledge of transport medicine standards.
    • Attend minimum 60% of scheduled staff meetings and review minutes.
    • Attend minimum 50% of case review conferences.
    • Attend at least two surgical skills labs each year.
    • Attend operating room or clinical experience if privilege requirements are unmet.
    • Perform techniques and medical procedures via simulators to maintain skill levels.
    • Meet all clinical practice, safety, customer service, and flight operations requirements set forth by Metro Life Flight and Metro Health System.
  • Coordination of Care
    • Consult with other professionals for problem solving and setting mutual goals.
    • Serve as resource for nurses and providers on clinical issues and provide education.
    • Plan for continuity of care, identify community resources, guide patients and families, and facilitate transfer coordination.
  • Leadership / Organizational Skills
    • Participate in division/department goal achievement and communicate issues appropriately.
    • Support advance practice registered nursing initiatives within the system.
    • Assist in orientation of new staff and serve as preceptor for students.
    • Serve on committees and partake in professional activities.
    • Present formal educational programs; for Life Flight Nurse Practitioner, present minimum two medical educational programs per year.
  • Professional Development
    • Remain current with evidence-based practice, national standards and ANA Code of Ethics.
    • Identify learning needs, set goals, and pursue required knowledge and skills.
    • Evaluate practice through self, physician, and peer evaluations including patient/family feedback.
    • Participate in performance improvement activities to improve patient outcomes.
    • Engage in research projects, evaluate literature, and integrate findings into practice.
