Description:

The Cardiac Stepdown RN is responsible for monitoring vital signs and administering medications. They manage cardiac devices and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure optimal recovery. Continuous monitoring of patients' cardiovascular status is essential, including heart rate and blood pressure. The RN assesses for signs of cardiac complications and responds appropriately. Regular evaluations of overall health, fluid balance, and respiratory function are part of their responsibilities.

They conduct thorough assessments of patients' responses to cardiac treatments. Administering prescribed medications, including antiarrhythmics and anticoagulants, is required. Monitoring for adverse reactions to medications, such as hypotension and bradycardia, is crucial. The RN ensures accurate administration of IV medications for cardiac support. Patient education on medications, including dosages and potential side effects, is necessary. Providing post-surgical and post-procedural care for patients recovering from heart surgery is a key duty.

They assist in managing postoperative pain and monitor for complications like bleeding and infection. Assessment of wound sites and providing necessary care is part of the role. Educating patients and families on lifestyle modifications and long-term care strategies is important. They prepare patients for discharge by teaching home care needs and follow-up appointments. Collaboration with interdisciplinary team members to develop comprehensive care plans is essential.

Effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team regarding progress and treatment plans is required. The RN participates in daily rounds to discuss patient progress and next steps in care. Documenting patient care and interventions in electronic health records promptly is necessary. Responding to emergent situations such as cardiac arrest requires immediate intervention. The RN assists in resuscitation efforts and coordinates with the team to stabilize patients.

They monitor and manage patients on life-support equipment when necessary. Following infection control protocols to prevent hospital-acquired infections is required. Ensuring patient safety by monitoring for signs of complications is crucial. The role involves working in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating patient acuity. Physical demands may include standing or walking for long periods and assisting patients. Adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment is essential.
