DescriptionThe NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly‑talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or a NASA‑affiliated research institute. Fellowship terms range from one to three years, designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Position Summary: Senior Postdoctoral Researcher in advanced structured materials and cell development of “next‑generation” batteries within the Materials Chemistry and Physics Branch at NASA Glenn Research Center. The successful candidate will have a PhD with a strong background in materials science, electrochemistry, and electrochemical energy‑storage systems such as Li‑sulfur and sodium‑ion batteries.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Design and develop research plan in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and multidisciplinary team.
- Develop and characterize novel battery materials, cathodes, ionic liquids, solid‑state electrolytes, and cell chemistries, including In‑Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) derived materials.
- Assemble battery cells and conduct electrochemical testing, cycle life, and temperature‑dependent performance evaluations.
- Apply computational methods to simulate cell performance and guide experimental work.
- Lead or mentor graduate students and research engineers within a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Prepare and present research findings at international conferences and in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Support proposal development for funding and contribute to grant writing.
- PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering.
- Strong record of publications in top peer‑reviewed journals.
- Experience with Li‑ion and beyond Li‑ion battery development, fabrication, and testing.
- Experience in synthesis and characterization of electroactive nanomaterials, solid‑state electrolytes, and ionic liquids.
- Proficiency in analytical techniques such as FTIR, Raman, UV – Vis, impedance spectroscopy, microscopy, and spectroscopy.
- Background in computational analysis of battery materials and mechanisms.
- Optional: experience with sodium‑ion cells and direct‑ink‑writing of 3‑D energy‑storage components.
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork abilities.
- U.S. Citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
- Doctoral degree (PhD).
