Position: Research Assistant 1 (part-time 24 hours/week for approximately 18 month term)

Case Western Reserve University is committed to providing a transparent estimate of the salary for this position at the time of its posting. The starting wage rate is $17.65 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform research work in medical settings and older adult housing to carry out activities of grant funded oral health disparities studies. This position will assist the research team with all aspects of the study including participant recruitment, retention, data collection and data management. This is a part‑time, term position.

Essential Functions
  • Perform research work in the community by driving to study sites to recruit participants and collect study data during in‑person subject visits at medical facilities and community locations as outlined in the study protocol. (35%)
  • Complete informed consent with individuals attending primary care visits and scheduled research visits to enroll them in the study. Record participant responses to surveys to collect study data. (35%)
  • Maintain electronic and paper research records including entering data into the database, auditing entered data and performing quality control checks of data to ensure data is entered correctly. (15%)
  • Maintain study supplies to ensure adequate materials are on‑hand at the study sites. (8%)
Nonessential Functions
  • Provide weekly reports to the research team regarding scheduling and recruitment progress. (4%)
  • Assist with literature searches and formatting for manuscripts and grants. (2%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)
Contacts
  • Department:
    Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.
  • University:
    Occasional contact with other departments to share information.
  • External:
    Daily contact with medical site and housing site personnel, and older adult patients.
  • Students:
    Contact with student employees to exchange information.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience/Licensing:
Bachelor's degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required. Valid Ohio driver's license required.

  • Ability to demonstrate successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
  • Willingness to learn and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and research participants face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONS

In addition to working in a general office environment, the employee will be required to drive to community sites located in Northeast Ohio to cover off‑site study visits, which may occur after normal business hours. Valid Ohio driver's license and reliable transportation required.

This is a Term position. They are treated like regular staff positions for medical and dental benefits eligibility, vacation, holidays, and sick time. Term employees are not eligible for life insurance, retirement, long term disability, short term disability, tuition assistance, layoff status, or severance pay. Staff in term positions are also subject to the performance management review process and positive corrective action when work performance or behavior is unsatisfactory or unacceptable.

Term employment does not alter the employment‑at‑will employee status of these employees.
