Summary

Under the general guidance and discretion of the Director and Chief, Public Safety or Lead Detective responsible for the criminal investigations and for further investigation of all felonies and other such misdemeanors that require extended investigation. Work of this class requires regular public contact with a high degree of tact, judgment, and technical knowledge. Subject matter expert for processing arrestees, preparing charges, and coordination with the prosecutor’s office.

Maintains proficiency for the rank assigned as listed in the job description of his rank. Work is performed with considerable latitude for independent judgment and actions. Supervises criminal investigation and other investigators as assigned to him or her and other supervisions as assigned by Director and Chief, Public Safety. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The Metro Health System.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School degree or passage of a high school equivalency exam.
  • Completion of Ohio Peace Officer training and certification (Must be a certified Ohio Police Officer by 2014).
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Police Officer Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills required to effectively interact with others, prepare comprehensive reports, provide effective testimony and interview individuals to obtain facts.
  • High degree of analytical ability to investigate incidents, interpret and translate information for use as evidence of prosecution and other criminal justice and administrative processes.
  • High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential MHS data and resources.
  • Thorough knowledge of, but not limited to, laws of arrest, search and seizure, and use of deadly force.
  • Required to achieve and maintain department’s qualifying firearms score for duration of employment.
  • Possess a valid Ohio driver’s license, obtain and maintain eligibility of insurability as determined by Metro Health System insurance carrier’s requirements to operate MHPD vehicles.
  • Possess reliable transportation to report to alternate sites for shift assignment.
  • Complete OPOTA Master Investigator certification within 36 months.
  • No prior conviction of a felony, or serious misdemeanor.
  • Age 21 or older and a U.S. citizen.

Preferred:

  • Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • IAHSS Basic, Advanced and Supervisory certification.
  • Two years of experience in a Detective role highly preferred.
  • Minimum two years of experience within the Metro Health Police Department (MHPD).
Physical Requirements
  • A psychological evaluation from a Metro Health System designated Psychologist which demonstrates satisfactory psychological fitness commensurate with the desired attributes of Leadership and of an armed officer.
  • Will be required to sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk frequently throughout the day.
  • May need to sit or stand for extended periods frequently. Finger & other physical dexterity to operate equipment as required for the job.
  • See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
  • Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
