Boiler/Burner Technician
The Boiler/Burner Field Service Technician provides hands-on service, troubleshooting, repair, startup, commissioning, and maintenance support for commercial and industrial boiler, burner, and combustion systems. This field-based role works directly with customers to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of steam and hot water generating equipment. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical and combustion troubleshooting experience and is comfortable working independently at customer facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and startup of commercial and industrial steam and hot water boiler systems.
- Service and maintain burners, combustion systems, flame safeguard controls, and associated boiler room equipment.
- Conduct combustion analysis on natural gas and fuel oil fired equipment using electronic combustion analyzers and related diagnostic tools.
- Adjust fuel-to-air ratios and optimize burner performance to maximize efficiency and ensure safe operation.
- Perform retrofit and repair work on boilers, burners, controls, and auxiliary equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and combustion-related equipment issues at customer facilities.
- Calibrate, adjust, and repair combustion controls, safety devices, and operating controls.
- Perform preventative maintenance inspections, equipment surveys, modifications, and upgrades.
- Assist with installation, startup, and commissioning of new boiler and burner systems.
- Review project requirements and prepare for service calls by evaluating equipment, identifying required materials, and coordinating jobsite activities.
- Read and interpret piping diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Maintain accurate service records, daily reports, and documentation for completed work.
- Manage parts inventory, service vehicle stock, and material requirements for field assignments.
- Communicate potential sales opportunities and equipment upgrade recommendations to internal teams.
- Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction through professional communication and technical support.
- Participate in ongoing technical training to stay current on equipment, controls, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of mechanical, boiler, burner, or combustion service experience.
- Strong knowledge of commercial and industrial steam and hot water boiler systems.
- Experience servicing burner management systems, flame safeguard controls, combustion equipment, and associated boiler room components.
- Hands-on experience with combustion testing, fuel-air ratio adjustments, and combustion efficiency optimization.
- Familiarity with gas trains, fuel oil systems, pressure controls, temperature controls, feedwater systems, and steam distribution equipment.
- Proficiency using volt-ohm meters (VOMs), combustion analyzers, and other electrical and mechanical troubleshooting tools.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, piping layouts, and blueprints.
- Knowledge of boiler room operations, preventative maintenance programs, and equipment startup procedures.
- Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
- Boiler Operator, Gas Installer, or similar industry licenses preferred.
- Vocational, technical, or trade school training related to combustion systems, HVAC, industrial maintenance, or controls preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Willingness to travel occasionally and work overtime or weekends when necessary.
