Summary
The Residential Monitor in a low-demand shelter is responsible for the overall functioning of the shelter, including maintaining a peaceful, safe, supportive, and orderly environment. The position serves single adults who are homeless and includes basic orientation (services, rules, and policies), assistance with basic immediate needs, de‑escalating conflict, and being a stable, welcoming presence.
Responsibilities- Conduct rounds, security checks, and perform searches as needed; immediately report abnormal findings to shift supervisor or Director of Operations.
- Enforce rules and assist with daily needs of shelter residents.
- Handle front desk duties, including enrolling new residents in the shelter data system, scanning residents in, enforcing bans, and utilizing appropriate security measures (e.g., metal detector, wanding, handling contraband).
- Monitor security cameras to ensure compliance with conduct policies.
- Interact with clients professionally, using open and respectful communication.
- De‑escalate potentially volatile situations between clients when necessary, utilizing Handle With Care’s intervention strategies.
- Monitor client and visitor movement inside the facility.
- Prepare incident/accident/injury reports as necessary.
- Maintain detailed records of events that occur during the shift.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Some experience working with the homeless, chemically dependent, or mentally disabled individuals.
- Effective communication and crisis intervention skills.
