Description:

Provide social work services to students and families related to social, emotional and life adjustments in society.

I. Develop, plan and implement educational programs for children. Participate in team meetings to screen; provide social development assessments and design intervention plans for students. Ensure safety of students. Maintain accurate and complete records as required. Develop and facilitate classroom interventions. Participate in Pupil Service Team meetings to screen, assess, and plan for students presenting problems in school. Plan and implement a program of individual and small group counseling with students, which includes:

• Contact students in caseload once each semester and meet with student and get acquainted and keep abreast of their plans
• Identify and reach out to students needing counseling or guidance services who do not come to the counselor by referral
• Work with students in response to referrals: self-referrals, referrals by other students, referrals from relatives, teachers, and administrators

Demonstrate respect for the worth, dignity, and quality of the student's human rights. Show concern for and assist in the planning of the student's educational, career, personal, and social development. Aid the student in self-evaluation, self-understanding, and self-direction, enabling his/her to make decisions consistent with immediate and long-range goals. Assist the student and parents in understanding strengths, weaknesses, interests, values, potentialities, and limitations.

Assist the student in developing good personal, positive attitudes and values. Encourage the student to participate in school activities with a view toward increasing effectiveness in personal and social activities. Assist the student in the development of an awareness of the world of work and in the use of school and community resources. Help the student to acquire a better understanding of the world of work through the acquisition of skills and attitudes and/or participation in work-related programs.

Encourage the student to plan and use leisure time activities to increase personal satisfaction. Indicate the conditions under which counseling is provided with respect to privileged communication. Assist in the adjustment of the student to elementary, middle, or high school. Demonstrate the ability to develop educational alternatives that reflect the diversity of cultural and ethnic backgrounds of all our students.

Interpret test and inventory results to students either individually or in small groups. Refer students to community resources whenever appropriate. Organize and implement group guidance and counseling on special topics that meet the assessed needs of students such as: dealing with attitudinal behavior, class cutting, drugs, alcohol, and those societal changes that impact the family. Assist in the collection, dissemination, and maintenance of educational, personal, social, and career information.

Assist in the coordination and accumulation of meaningful information concerning students.

II. Establish family contacts to alleviate family stress to enable students to function effectively in school. Provide parents with accurate information about the school policies and procedures, educational and career opportunities, course or program requirements, and resources that will contribute to the growth and development of students. Assist parents in forming realistic perceptions of the student's aptitudes, abilities, interests, and attitudes as related to educational and career planning, academic achievement, persona-social development and total school progress.

Interview the family to assess problems affecting school adjustment. Design home-school prevention/intervention programs. Maintain a flexible schedule allowing for evening contacts with families.

III. Advocate as School-Community Liaison for students and families. Link school and community services. Help schools receive adequate support from social health and mental health agencies. Expand family's knowledge base of community resources and utilization of such resources.

IV. Provide various group prevention/interventions for students, staff, and families. Develop staff in service training programs such as classroom management. Develop prevention-focused programs. Assist and facilitate training such as social skills for students in school. Provide parent-training programs in school and in home settings.

V. Provide individual interventions Respond to crisis situations. Conduct counseling and casework with students and families. Help the system respond effectively to each student's needs.
