The Hydrologist Technician provides technical support for hydrologic data collection, monitoring, and analysis related to surface water, groundwater, and watershed systems. This position involves a combination of fieldwork and office-based analysis. Has 3–5 years of relevant experience and is capable of working with moderate independence while supporting hydrologists, engineers, and project teams.

Duty Station: Cleveland, TN
Travel: up to 75%, contingent on business needs
Duties/Responsibilities- Collect, compile, and analyze hydrologic data such as streamflow, groundwater levels, precipitation, and water quality.
- Perform field measurements using standard hydrologic equipment (e.g., flow meters, current meters, data loggers).
- Install, inspect, calibrate, and maintain hydrologic monitoring equipment and gauging stations.
- Assist with hydrologic and hydraulic studies, including watershed assessments and flood evaluations.
- Process, validate, and manage datasets using Excel, GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS), and other data tools.
- Prepare technical reports, data summaries, charts, and maps.
- Support environmental compliance, monitoring programs, and permitting activities.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures during all field operations.
- Maintain detailed records of fieldwork, equipment usage, and data collection activities.
- Collect hydrologic permitting and condition‑assessment data on storm‑impacted roads, with emphasis on identifying bankfull indicators, performing stream determinations, and documenting Aquatic Resource Alteration Permit (ARAP) compliance.
- Experience with hydrologic field equipment and data collection methods.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel).
- Working knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field locations.
- Combination of office and outdoor fieldwork.
- Travel to project sites may be required.
- Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related field. - Required:
3–5 years of relevant hydrologic or environmental field/technical experience. - Preferred:
Experience with hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS). - Preferred:
Familiarity with USGS or similar hydrologic data collection standards. - Preferred:
Experience with water quality sampling and environmental monitoring programs. - Preferred:
Knowledge of federal, state, or local environmental regulations. - Preferred:
Experience working in remote or challenging field environments.
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying weather and terrain.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment (up to ~50 lbs).
- Walking, standing, and working near or in water bodies.
