Who We Are Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Cleveland, Texas. UTLX is a trusted industry leader, recognized for its regulatory, engineering, and commercial expertise, and is the preferred railcar and services provider for many customers nationwide.

Position Summary The Car Repairman is responsible for performing welding and mechanical repairs on tank cars, ensuring structural integrity, safety, and quality while following established procedures and working in a physically demanding industrial environment.

Primary Responsibilities Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.

Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.

Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.

Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc. using various hand and power tools.

Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.

Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.

Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company

Demonstrated mechanical aptitude

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

Ability to work any shift, including overtime, as permitted by the union contract

Dependable attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications Welding certifications

Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.

Rail industry experience

Valve and fittings experience

Tank car knowledge or experience

Work Environment & Schedule Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.

Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions

Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common

Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces

Must be able to enter tank cars through 20‑inch manway openings

Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation

Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills

Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols

Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection tasks

On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
