Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Cleveland, Texas. Position Summary

The Blaster is responsible for preparing railcar surfaces for inspection, repair, coating, and finishing by operating industrial blasting equipment and performing related surface preparation activities. This position removes rust, scale, weld slag, and other contaminants from railcars to ensure surfaces meet quality standards and customer specifications. The role requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and a strong commitment to safety while working in an industrial railcar repair environment.

Duties may vary, and additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Safely operate shot blasting equipment with moderate supervision.
  • Prepare interior and exterior railcar surfaces by removing rust, scale, weld slag, and contaminants.
  • Use approved air tools to remove grit, dust, and debris following blasting operations.
  • Remove protective coverings and inspect railcars and components for damage following blasting activities.
  • Grind weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges as required.
  • Level girth welds on tank and hopper cars when required by specifications.
  • Vacuum and clean tank car interiors to prepare surfaces for further processing.
  • Apply foiling, masking, and taping materials to protect components and surfaces as required.
  • Maintain, clean, and inspect blasting equipment and related tools.
  • Monitor equipment performance and notify supervision of maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain accurate material and supply inventories and replenish consumables as required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and promptly identify and report hazards.
  • Follow all company safety rules, quality standards, and work instructions.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to read and understand safety rules, procedures, operating instructions and work orders.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an industrial manufacturing or repair environment.
  • Industrial blasting or surface preparation experience.
  • Rail industry experience.
  • Tank car knowledge or experience.
  • Experience operating pneumatic tools and industrial equipment.
Work Environment & Schedule
  • Work performed in an industrial railcar repair facility with physically demanding conditions.
  • Requires lifting up to 50 pounds and handling blasting hoses and related equipment.
  • Requires considerable physical activity, including climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending and material handling.
  • May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding
