Supports the teacher and student to ensure the best possible learning experience for special education children in a safe and secure environment while maintaining confidentiality.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assist an individual student one-on-one, in small groups or in classroom under the supervision of the teachers as directed.
- Assist students with completing academic tasks.
- Engage students with instructional activities developed by the teacher, such as reading, writing, math, spelling, and life skills.
- Implement behavior management plans, including using Crisis Intervention and Prevention (CPI) training.
- Support monitoring, intervening, and redirecting student behaviors, and deescalate behavior.
- Assist students with personal needs: hygiene, diapering, toileting, clothing.
- Familiarize with individual student requirements and/or behavior plans.
- Collect data related to behavior, academics, instruction.
- Participate in professional development.
- Communicate with community, staff, and students to answer questions and explain information.
- Education – High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience – Experience working with children (required); experience with special education students (preferred).
- Knowledge – School policies and safety regulations (required); working knowledge of computers (preferred).
- Skills – Good communication, adaptability to learn.
- Abilities – Adapt to teaching skills; handle emotional and physical challenges; be caring, understanding, patient, friendly; apply common sense; communicate effectively; read and interpret school policies; present information in one‑on‑one, small groups and classroom; physically manage student behaviors and equipment; solve practical problems; work in high demanding environment; complete training; follow behavioral plans; read, write, and communicate in English.
The employee frequently sits, walks, or stands for long periods, runs after students, stoops and bends for toileting, lifts and transfers students, lifts up to 50 pounds and pushes or pulls up to 90 pounds. May assist mobility equipment and field trips. Physical strength, agility, dexterity, reflexes, and the ability to perform these tasks are required.
