Supports the teacher and student to ensure the best possible learning experience for the special education children in a safe and secure environment while maintaining confidentiality.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assist an individual student one-on-one, in small groups or in classroom under the supervision of the teacher as directed.
- Assist students with completing academic tasks.
- Engage students with instructional activities developed by the teacher (e.g., reading, writing, math, spelling, life skills).
- Manage student behavior by properly implementing behavior management plans, including Crisis Intervention and Prevention (CPI) training.
- Support monitoring, intervening, and redirecting student behaviors; prevent and deescalate student behavior.
- Assist students with personal needs, including hygiene, diapering, toileting and clothing.
- Familiarize yourself with individual student requirements and behavior plan.
- Assist in data collection related to behavior, academics, instruction.
- Participate in professional development.
- Communicate with community, staff, and students to answer questions, disseminate or explain information.
Skills and Abilities
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: May be required to take additional classes to address students specific needs.
- Experience: Experience working with children (required); experience working with special education students (preferred).
- Knowledge: Knowledge of school policies and safety regulations (required); working knowledge of computers (preferred).
- Skills: Good communication skills (required); adaptability to learn (required).
- Abilities: Ability to adapt to a variety of teaching skills, handle emotional and physical challenges, be caring, patient, friendly; apply common sense to carry out instructions; communicate effectively with students, staff, community; read and interpret school policies; present information in one-on-one, small group, classroom; manage student behaviors and equipment physically; solve practical problems; work in high demanding environment; complete required training;
follow behavioral management plan; read/write/communicate effectively in English.
The employee must sit, walk, stand for long periods; run after students; stoop, bend, lift to assist with toileting and hygiene; have physical strength, agility, dexterity; may lift up to 50 pounds, push/pull up to 90 pounds; assist with mobility equipment; assist on buses and field trips.
