Location: Clinton Charter Township

The Academic Advisor provides holistic advising that supports and advocates for students as they progress toward completing their academic objectives. As part of the Counseling and Academic Advising Department, this role is dedicated to supporting declared/established students who have identified a specific Macomb Community College degree or certificate or have selected a transfer institution and major as their academic goal while fostering persistence, progress, and completion.

Through comprehensive, student-centered guidance and intentional support, this position plays a key role in advancing student success and promoting equitable academic outcomes.

Student Success & Coordinated Care
  • Serve as part of the Student Success Team using an outreach approach of coordinated care to support students.
  • Provide comprehensive academic and transfer advising services to established (decided) enrolled students, as well as prospective individuals seeking general information about Macomb.
  • Provide first semester course planning for new students, helping them with course suggestions based on academic preparation, assessment results, and program pathways.
  • In alignment with the Standard of Care operations, deliver proactive services via in-person, virtual, phone, walk-in, group, and online modalities in response to student needs, enrollment trends, and changing campus environments.
  • Utilize a caseload approach within a student success team including but not limited to monitoring, proactive outreach, referring and maintaining timely and accurate documentation of student interactions, communications, and progress to support continuous improvement and compliance.
Academic and Transfer Goals
  • Provide personalized support using data-informed practices to proactively monitor, track and support and assist students in succeeding in their academic pursuits and/or transfer goals.
  • Maintain familiarity with updated and accurate information about Macomb’s degree/certificate programs and transfer information.
  • Utilize transfer agreements and other transfer resources to support students with their transfer plan.
  • Provide academic advising support to students enrolled in a declared program who are not planning to transfer upon program completion.
  • Conduct unofficial degree audits.
Academic & Holistic Support
  • Provide proactive, holistic student support through counseling referrals, academic alert interventions, and connections to campus and community resources.
  • Support students on academic or financial aid probation and those requiring specialized academic monitoring.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and counseling services to support student success, including referring exploratory (undecided) students for career planning.
  • Interpret and communicate college policies, procedures, and students’ rights and responsibilities.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Model ethical, professional academic advising practices and collaboration across departments and divisions.
  • Participate and serve as a representative for counseling and academic advising at outreach events and activities, such as new student orientations, as needed.
  • Attend transfer events to remain updated with transfer information when applicable.
  • Participate actively in individual and team professional development opportunities to enhance skills, remain current with best practices, and support continuous improvement in advising and counseling services.
Other Duties
  • Perform additional responsibilities in alignment with the Student Services Unit, the departmental goals.

Bachelor’s degree required.

Academic Advising or admissions experience at a college/university preferred but not required.
