POSITION SUMMARY
Supports the teacher and students to ensure the best possible learning experience for special education students in a safe environment while maintaining confidentiality.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist individual students one‑on‑one, in small groups or classroom settings under teacher supervision.
- Assist students with completing academic tasks.
- Engage students with instructional activities (reading, writing, math, spelling, life skills, etc.).
- Manage student behavior by implementing behavior management plans, including Crisis Intervention and Prevention (CPI) training.
- Monitor, intervene, and redirect student behaviors; de‑escalate when necessary.
- Assist students with personal needs such as hygiene, diapering, toileting, and clothing.
- Familiarize yourself with each student’s requirements and behavior plan.
- Collect data related to behavior, academics, and instruction.
- Participate in professional development.
- Communicate with community, staff, and students to answer questions and explain information.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: May require additional classes to address specific student needs.
Experience:
- Experience working with children (required).
- Experience working with special education students (preferred).
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of school policies and safety regulations (required).
- Working knowledge of computers (preferred).
Skills:
- Good communication skills (required).
- Adaptability to learn (required).
- Patience (required).
Abilities:
- Adapt to a variety of teaching skills.
- Handle emotional and physical challenges.

- Read, write, and communicate in English, including safety instructions and emergency responses.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequently sit, walk, stand, and occasionally run after students. Must stoop, bend, and assist with student toileting, diapering, lifting, and transferring. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and pushing or pulling up to 90 pounds. As needed, assist students with mobility equipment and bus transportation. May also assist students on field trips.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Noise level moderate to loud. Physical demands are described above.
