Food Handler/Custodian – 10 Month Position
Starting Date: Immediately
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $22.23 per hour (up to $26.10 per hour)
Work Hours: 6:30am – 3:00pm (8hrs/day)
Position SummaryDrives a food service truck to deliver and pick up food, supplies, and equipment to and from schools throughout the district. Receives vendor deliveries at the warehouse, stocks inventory, pulls daily stock for central and satellite operations, loads delivery trucks, and completes daily runs, including processing returns and restocking for the following days. Delivers cash receipts from satellite locations to the food service office and manages pickup and delivery of daily school mail.
PrincipalDuties and Responsibilities
- Receives, stocks, restocks, and stores daily school food and supply orders from central kitchen and warehouse.
- Pulls daily stock for central and satellite operations, loads delivery trucks, drives deliveries, and completes daily runs including processing returns and restocking for the following days.
- Delivers cash receipts from satellites to the food service office and preforms pickup and delivery of daily school mail.
- Collects, loads and unloads food and paper supplies with or without assistance.
- Follows procedures for receiving, storing and rotating food and paper supplies.
- Detects truck driving and operating problems and reports to transportation mechanics.
- Demonstrates highest ethical and professional behavior when working with students, parents, school personnel and outside agencies.
- Serves as a role model for students and staff, demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire, grooming, and a strong work ethic.
- Participates in in‑service and workshop programs and attends required meetings.
- Adheres to federal statutes, regulations, state and local health agency requirements, and charter school policies.
- Performs any duties and responsibilities assigned by the director of food services or designee.
- Uses computers and electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
- Custodial duties: cleans floors and bathrooms in the central kitchen daily; removes trash and recyclables daily; performs related duties as directed by supervisor.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Certificates, Licenses, or RegistrationsValid Michigan driver’s license and valid State of Michigan chauffeur’s license. Must meet DOT driving standards.
Experience- 1–3 months of related experience in food service and/or safe food‑handling practices.
- General math skills to count inventory and stock.
- Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions related to food supplies, equipment, motor vehicle operation, and hi‑lo usage (preferred).
- Read and comprehend safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Write simple correspondence.
- Handle cash and complete records requiring basic math skills.
- Complete USDA Professional Development requirements.
- Pass physical demands tests, DOT‑style physical and drug tests.
- Communicate effectively with students and school administrators and staff.
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Solve practical problems involving several concrete variables in circumstances with limited standardization.
- Use basic computer software applications.
- Drive and use a hi‑lo.
- Rationally and effectively deal with emergencies.
- Read, write, and communicate effectively in English to perform essential duties, including safety instructions, emergency responses, documentation, and interaction with English‑speaking staff, students, and community.
DOT‑style physical and drug screen, including a push/pull test of 400lbs and a lift test up to 50lbs.
Physical DemandsRegularly required to sit, use hands, talk, hear, stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; occasionally push, pull, move up to 400lbs; regularly lift up to 50lbs. Must handle extreme hot/cold temperatures and work in a noisy environment.
