Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician (Quinnesec, MI)
Purpose:
The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician is responsible for coordinating, planning, and executing preventive maintenance activities for mobile heavy equipment assets while ensuring equipment reliability, availability, and safe operation. This role works closely with Operations to schedule maintenance and repair activities that minimize impacts to production and maximize equipment uptime. The position manages lubrication programs, filter inventories, critical spare parts inventories, and maintenance records for Caterpillar and Liebherr heavy equipment fleets.
- Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while performing maintenance activities.
- Create and sustain a safety-focused work environment that promotes hazard recognition, training, and compliance with safety standards.
- Develop, coordinate, and execute preventive maintenance schedules for heavy mobile equipment.
- Collaborate with Operations personnel to schedule maintenance and repair work around operational needs and production requirements.
- Perform inspections and condition assessments on heavy equipment to identify potential reliability issues and maintenance needs.
- Coordinate and perform planned maintenance activities, including lubrication, fluid changes, filter replacements, and component inspections.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures, use electronic diagnostic tools and coordinate corrective maintenance activities to restore equipment availability.
- Manage equipment maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, and preventive maintenance documentation.
- Maintain and administer lubrication management programs to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
- Manage inventories of lubricants, filters, and critical spare parts to support maintenance activities while minimizing stock shortages.
- Coordinate procurement of maintenance materials, consumables, and replacement components as necessary.
- Monitor equipment performance and maintenance trends to identify opportunities for reliability improvements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing downtime, improving equipment availability, and lowering maintenance costs.
- Work closely with maintenance planners, supervisors, operators, and vendors to ensure efficient execution of maintenance activities.
- Assist with equipment shutdown planning and major repair scheduling.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records within computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other tracking tools.
- Provide technical support and recommendations regarding equipment maintenance practices and repair priorities.
- Ensure work areas, maintenance shops, service trucks, and storage locations remain organized and compliant with safety standards.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician provides maintenance coordination and technical support for equipment including, but not limited to:
- Caterpillar D8, D9, and D10 Dozers
- Caterpillar 980G and 980H Wheel Loaders
- Liebherr L580 Wheel Loaders
- Additional mobile construction, material handling, and support equipment as assigned
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
Associate degree, technical certification, or vocational training in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance, diesel equipment maintenance, mining, construction, or industrial mobile equipment environments preferred.
- Experience with Caterpillar and Liebherr equipment strongly preferred.
- Experience scheduling and coordinating preventive maintenance activities preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of diesel-powered heavy equipment systems including engines, hydraulics, powertrains, electrical systems, braking systems, and undercarriages.
- Ability to develop, implement, and manage preventive maintenance programs.
- Knowledge of lubrication best practices and fluid management programs.
- Experience managing inventory and spare parts requirements.
