Position: Flight Paramedic Full Time

Description

Provides professional care for acutely ill and injured patients incorporating the education and skills learned and certified as a paramedic, for all age groups in an air medical (helicopter), pre‑hospital, and hospital environment (emergency and critical care). Is guided by Mercy One Protocols or direct medical control. Serves as a preceptor for new employees, students and Mercy One volunteers (Ride‑Along Program).

  • Performs initial and ongoing subjective and objective assessment of patients with complex health care needs in the pre‑hospital and hospital environment.
  • Promotes patient‑centered care.
  • Implements interventions and treatments consistent with Mercy One protocols and/or medical onsite direction, documenting response to cares and treatments.
  • Collaborates with the patient, significant others, rescue personnel and outlying hospital personnel to create a multidisciplinary health‑care team whose goal is to provide care that is continuous and well coordinated.
  • Quickly, efficiently, and calmly responds to emergent and critical situations.
  • Communicates with patients at a level consistent with age and understanding.
  • Documents a comprehensive patient record that is organized and complete reflecting all aspects of care provided.

Skills and Abilities

Required
  • Minimum of three years recent, full‑time experience functioning as a paramedic or critical care paramedic, providing direct patient care.
Certifications at Time of Hire
  • Current certification as a Paramedic (PM) in the State of Iowa.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Iowa Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) endorsement.
Obtain Within 3 Months of Hire
  • Successful completion of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served.
Obtain Within 6 Months of Hire
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Advanced Trauma Care for Nursing (ATCN).
  • Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC).
  • Transport Nurse Advanced Trauma Course (TNATC).
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).
  • Pre‑Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification.
Obtain Within 2 Years of Hire
  • Flight Paramedic‑Certified (FP‑C) or Critical Care Paramedic‑Certified (CCP‑C).
  • Must meet weight requirement.
Overview

This job requires excellent fitness to lift patients from various locations and heights, often exceeding 100 pounds, and load into the helicopter. The flight team member must, at time of hire and thereafter, weigh less than 225 pounds. Failure to maintain this weight will result in a counseling/disciplinary process as defined by the company’s weight policy. The weight restriction is necessary due to the maximum gross weight capacity of the primary and backup aircraft.

Pre‑requisites
  • Must pass an initial audiogram with an annual test thereafter.
  • Must not have any inner ear disturbance that might be affected in high altitudes.
Physical Requirements

If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting greater than 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.

Heavy Work

Exerting up to 65 lbs. push/pull force to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 40 lbs. frequently, and up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.
