Compensation:
Approximately $120,000 annually, depending on experience
Our nonprofit client in Montgomery County, MD, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller for a full-time, on-site, temp-to-perm opportunity. This hands‑on leadership role supports the Controller and finance team in maintaining strong financial operations, compliance, reporting accuracy, and internal controls across the organization.
This position plays a key role in budgeting, audit and Form 990 preparation, monthly close, grants compliance, and financial reporting. The Assistant Controller also partners with program leaders and serves as a backup across core accounting functions.
Key Responsibilities- Support annual budgeting process and budget uploads in Sage Intacct
- Assist with monthly close, journal entries, reconciliations, and balance sheet schedules
- Help lead year‑end close, audit preparation, and auditor support
- Support Form 990 and required government and charity filings
- Review AP, payroll, and key transactions for accuracy and compliance
- Oversee reconciliations and documentation prepared by finance and grants staff
- Maintain and improve internal controls and finance procedures
- Develop and enhance reports and dashboards in Sage Intacct
- Serve as backup for payroll, AP, AR, billing, and reconciliations
Supervise and mentor junior finance staff - Partner with program managers to review monthly financial results
- 5+ years progressive accounting experience
- 3+ years of nonprofit accounting experience
- Government grants accounting and compliance experience
- Supervisory experience
- CPA or CPA candidate
- Strong US GAAP knowledge
- Advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables, Lookups or similar)
- Hands‑on Sage Intacct expertise
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Experience with process improvement initiatives
- Experience with Ramp or similar AP automation tools
