Overview
General Summary of Position:
Under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Services Supervisor and the Patient Services Manager the Dietary Aide performs a variety of duties from serving food items to patients, associates, and guests to dish room/sanitation duties. Dietary Aides are cross-trained to work every position on the tray line (e.g., starter, expo, checker, Hospitality Aide). The Dietary Aide serves food to customers in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner as well as clean up after serving hours.
The Dietary Aide maintains sanitation standards in compliance with the cleaning schedule/assignment in the serving area as well as all equipment and dining room tables. Some light food preparation such as cold salads, grill items, cold sandwiches, cutting pies and cakes, preparing desserts, etc., is required of this position.
- Assembles prepared food on trays for regular and therapeutic diets if needed.
- Maintains serving area in a clean, neat, and orderly manner before and after meals are served.
- Delivers food trucks to the patient floors and to patients as specified if needed. Returns trucks to the dish room at the designated times.
- Responsible for washing pots and pans, making sure they are stocked after being completely dry if needed.
- Disposes of trash and garbage three times a day; more frequently if needed.
- Delivers clean dishes and utensils to the designated area.
- Sweeps and mops floors after each meal; cleans walk-ins and storage area as well.
- Assists with the preparation of salads, desserts, and nourishments.
- Checks with nursing personnel if an NPO sign is on the door (if delivering patient trays). Follows cleaning and sanitation duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Sets up and maintains adequate food and supplies as required. Labels all food per policy. Maintains consistent food serving sizes per policy.
- Required to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts. Assists customers with any requests and/or complaints.
- Returns all unused items to the refrigerators, freezers, or store-room properly wrapped, dated, and labeled; places in the appropriate place after each meal. Follows break schedules as indicated.
- Tends and loads dish machine after meal times if needed. Maintains good attendance.
- Maintains serving area in a clean, neat, and orderly manner. Knows and understands all departmental policies and procedures (MSDS, safety, infection control, sanitation standards, portion control, diets, NPOs, supplements, etc.).
- Assists in maintaining the restrooms in a clean and sanitary manner. Directly responsible to respond to customer needs/requests in the department as well as outside the department in a helpful manner at all times, even in crisis situations.
- Performs any major cleaning duties as assigned by the supervisor. Responsible for handling cash if cashiering for that day; responsible for following proper cashier and cash handling procedures.
- Cleans all equipment per cafeteria cleaning schedule.

- Maintain good customer service skills when dealing with public/patients/co-workers. Must report to the supervisor when the register lines are long (10 customers or more) to ensure speedy service to our customers.
- Call patient by last name using words like Mr./Mrs./Ms. and knock on door announcing self as a member of the dietary team prior to entering the patient's room (when working patient tray line if needed). Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Some food experience preferred

- Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for Med Star Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
- Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

This position has a hiring range of USD $18.00 - USD $29.74 /Hr.
