Position Description
Full‑time, permanent, represented, safety‑sensitive Maintenance Worker II positions within the Department of Public Works (Highways) for Anne Arundel County Government. This is manual labor involving unskilled and limited semi‑skilled tasks that are physically demanding.
Nature and Variety of WorkWork involves manual tasks of more than ordinary difficulty that require some skills or special knowledge gained through on‑the‑job training or experience. The worker may serve as a lead worker for a small team of lower or equal grade workers and may have supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the foreman. Work is performed with some independence under the supervision of a superior who assigns work and conducts frequent inspections to ensure proper performance.
Examples of Duties:
- Operate various types of equipment and perform manual labor in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of roads, storm drains, public facilities, traffic signs and markings.
- Drive trucks for routine transportation and hauling.
- Take out, install, repair, and do concrete work on curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; dig out broken spots in street surfaces, fill joints and cracks.
- Mow grass with tractor mower and act as a skilled trades helper.
- Stripes roads; paint crosswalks and other messages; install and maintain traffic signs; operate paint‑striping and road‑marking equipment.
- Install and maintain parks and recreation equipment; perform limited skilled carpentry and masonry work; assemble playground equipment.
- Mow golf course greens, fairways, tees, and rough; water, fertilize, and spray pesticides; rake sand traps; change tee markers and cups; operate specialized mowing, raking, and related equipment; may perform sub‑professional horticultural duties.
- Operate power tools, tractors, light trucks, and related equipment as needed for regular duties or on a relief or seasonal basis.
- Perform related work as required.
- Knowledge of the operation and use of power equipment and light‑to‑medium duty automotive and related equipment applicable to the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the manual tasks and other characteristics involved in work assignments.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Skill in the operation of required tools and equipment.
- Education:
Sufficient education to understand and follow oral and written instructions. - Experience:
One (1) or more years in work providing familiarity with the area of assignment (e.g., Public Works, operating loaders, light trucks, and manual labor).
- Valid non‑commercial Class C motor vehicle operator’s license; and, as determined by the area of assignment, a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator’s license or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
- Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Medical Certificate as mandated by Federal law for a CDL Learner’s Permit. A CDL Learner’s Permit must be obtained within 45 days of hire to allow for adequate CDL training. Successful candidates must obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire.
- This is a Safety Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.
