Major Responsibilities
  • Provide clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes in patients (e.g., skin condition, vital signs, mental status).
  • Provide constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, utilizing interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if necessary, assisting with restraints per training and education.
  • Assist patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment.
  • Assist in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
  • Maintain patient safety by performing safety checks, using fall‑prevention devices, and following Restraint Policy standards for restrained patients.
  • Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximetry) and record patients’ height and weight.
  • Perform EKGs, point‑of‑care (POC) tests, and bladder scanning; collect, label, and prepare specimens for transport to the lab.
  • Perform other unit‑specific procedures such as battery changes for telemetry units, checking equipment status, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies.
  • Assist RN/LICENCHED INDEPENDENT PRACTITIONER with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, obtaining equipment and supplies, positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning equipment after the procedure.
  • Observe, measure, and record oral food and fluid intake; refill tube‑feeding bags as directed; empty and record output from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, and drainage systems; perform ostomy care on established ostomate patients as directed.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs by acting as a source of information and building relationships that support collaborative care.
  • Provide respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, families, visitors, and others.
  • Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Request assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
  • Keep current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and responding to UMMHC e‑mails regularly.
  • Precept new Patient Care Technicians (PCT II, when qualified).
  • Phlebotomy in certain locations (PCT II, when qualified).

  • Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Attend a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
  • Demonstrate use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
