Head Groundskeeper

Under the direction of the Director of Operations the Head Groundskeeper is responsible for keeping the assigned district(s) building(s) grounds safe, functional and secure in accordance with prescribed Building Codes of the State of Michigan and established L'Anse Creuse Public School District Policies and Procedures. The Head Groundskeeper must maintain any assigned building(s) grounds in a state of operational excellence such that they present no interruptions, distractions, or obstacles to the educational program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Required to use ladders in the course of the duties and personnel lifts for service work of equipment and fixtures or buildings
  • Projects a positive image for the school district with his/her team, whenever the public, guests or visitors are in the building. (Develops and implements team approach.)
  • Works closely with the Director of Athletics and/or Administrators to be prepared for scheduled activities and unscheduled events as required.
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining grounds equipment.
  • Responsible for keeping all assigned grounds; particularly the district athletic fields, turf areas, parking facilities, outdoor lighting, landscaping, all outdoor equipment, and playgrounds in a condition of operating excellence.
  • Obtain and renew a commercial pesticide application license.
  • Responsible for maintaining an established preventive maintenance program for the grounds and grounds equipment to include associated records. The PM program will identify daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly duties.
  • Must be able to drive from site to site and hold a valid Michigan driver's license. (a class "A" License is required)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director for Operations and or his/her designee.
  • Ability to work mandatory overtime on a short notice basis (to plow snow or salt).
  • Receive and accomplish work orders from the Director for Operations.
  • Maintain tools and equipment as assigned.
  • Drive trucks and other grounds equipment.
  • Snow removal and spread sand/salt products to prevent slipping as directed by the Director for Operations e.g., driveways, parking lots, sidewalks and easements.
  • Assure that all parking lots, walks and steps are free from ice, snow, mud, dust, and other debris as required.
  • Remove debris from grounds, as required.
  • Installation and repair of equipment e.g., lawn equipment, vehicles, fencing, athletic equipment, masonry work, all areas pertaining to lawn care, up-keep of yards, athletic fields, and playground equipment and others.
  • Care of grounds: shall be able to prepare and maintain athletic fields and turf e.g., mowing, sprinkling, weeding, edging of lawns, lining fields for athletic contests, dragging playing field surfaces, fertilize athletic fields & grounds, pesticide application and others.
  • Cut weeds and remove grass from parking areas, along fences, and around shrubbery, as needed.
  • Assure that all parking lot drains are cleaned at regular intervals and maintained in a satisfactory condition.
  • Plant, prune and trim trees and shrubbery, along with inspecting for insect damage as required.
  • Pick up supplies, parts or equipment from vendors as directed.
  • Inspect and make repairs to playground equipment.
  • Move supplies and equipment (district-wide) as directed.
  • Supervise temporary employees (especially during summer) to see that they are in accordance with school district policies.
  • Manage inventory of supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Make recommendations for grounds and equipment repair in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Assist the Director for Operations to direct any contracted services related to grounds.
  • Develop reports on assigned building(s) and grounds activities.
  • Athletics:
    • Ensure all athletic venues, such as, Baseball, Softball and Soccer Fields are ready for scheduled events. Fertilize the lawn in the spring and fall. Spray pesticide to the weeds in and around the fields. Fix, maintain and monitor irrigation. Roll the fields to keep level. Add dirt and grass seed to bare areas on the field. At the end of the season, take the nets down and put them away.
