The physician assistant first assist practices medicine under the supervision of a physician. The role is unique to the Physician Assistants specialty area in Surgical Oncology. Provides direct patient care and assumes primary responsibility for clinical management of patients in ambulatory, operating room and inpatient settings. Collaborates, refers, and consults with department attending physicians, specialists, and other members of the health care team to deliver effective, efficient, safe, and high-quality care.

** A Brief Overview
** The physician assistant first assist practices medicine under the supervision of a physician. The role is unique to the Physician Assistants specialty area in CV Surgery. Provides direct patient care and assumes primary responsibility for clinical management of patients in ambulatory, operating room and inpatient settings. Collaborates, refers, and consults with department attending physicians, specialists, and other members of the health care team to deliver effective, efficient, safe, and high-quality care.

Contributes to organizational and departmental continuous performance and quality improvement projects. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

** What you will do
*** Provides diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and preventative care under the supervision of a physician. Functions primarily as a first assistant during cardiovascular and thoracic operative procedures.
* Clinical Practice Expert:
Provides advanced level of direct and indirect care to individual patients/families and/or groups of patients/families in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
* Evidence-Based Consultant & Researcher:
Demonstrates collaborative leadership with researchers, other health professionals, divisions, and departments to generate knowledge and make practice changes based on research findings, as well as, the results of the organizational and departmental quality improvement processes.
* Clinical Leadership:
Provides leadership in meeting system, organizational, division, and departmental goals.
* Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self-development.  
** Education/Formal Training Requirements*
* * Required - Master's Degree Physician Assistant  
** Work Experience Requirements*
* * Required - Physician Assistant 1-3 years  
** Licenses and Certifications Requirements*

- Licensed Physician Assistant Tennessee
- Tennessee Board of Physician Assistants
